There are laws that a for the LGBT community and there are laws against the LGBT community. When one law is made there is always a new one to repel the old ones. Some laws such as the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 lets the government treat same sex couples like they are not even married. Other laws make same sex couples pay heavy taxes and same sex couples are not allowed to have marriage benefits like opposite sex couples. An example of these taxes is about “Windsor [who] got bitter news later in the form of federal and New York estate tax bills totaling $600,000 that would not have been levied on an opposite-sex couple” (Jost). There is another law that was passed six months after it was ruled that banning same sex couples was unconstitutional, and it was called Proposition 8. Same sex couples are trying to get “the justices to strike down California's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in the state just six months after a court ruled that preventing gays and lesbians from marrying was unconstitutional” (Jost). These laws cause a constant race to create and destroy laws; that deal with the ability for same sex couples to get married and for the people who believe that same sex marriage is wrong to refuse that
