Tim recently found out that his school will be moving to the four-day school week. His school made the change because of financial reasons hoping the four-day week would save the school money. Tim didn’t care why his school switched to the new schedule, he was just excited that he didn’t have school on Fridays. This excitement quickly faded when Tim looked closely at his schedule and realized that his school day lasted an extra 90 minutes this year. Then he remembered that he would still have basketball practice on Fridays and games too. All of this information depressed Tim and he begged his parents to switch him to a school with a five-day school week. This scenario shows that even a student who dislikes school can see the flaws in the shorter four-day school week. One drawback to longer school days is that it makes life more difficult on teachers. Teachers, who are already strained trying to get through the curriculum now have one less day per week. “It makes it very difficult to get through the curriculum with one less day per week.” - Tonya Winger, HCS teacher. People may think that the longer school day automatically allows for students to learn more information but teachers have to know how much new information students can handle for one day. For example, a teacher cannot move on to the next lesson until his/her students understand the content. Sometimes that may require that students take the work home, giving them some time to comprehend the lesson. In that case teachers are only getting through as much curriculum as they were with the shorter school day. Teachers can work as hard as they want but ultimately it is up to the students how much they
