The cancellation of school sports can help to end the amount of academic distraction that occurs throughout the season. According to a recent study by Amanda Ripley, “distraction, however, may be the greatest cost of all, focus shifts away from learning” (11). Ripley also stated that when sports in the Premont Independent School District in Texas were cancelled, “during the first semester, 80 percent of students passed their classes, compared with 50 percent the previous fall” (11). This shows that after school sports should come to an end because students are doing better in classes when they are not preoccupied with their after school activities.
