Stereotypes In John Stuart Hall's Whites Of Their Eyes

Stereotypes vary widely from person to person and place to place. There are those that society embraces and facilitates, those that are formed by groups of people with regard to themselves and others, and finally there are your own personal labels that you apply to people in any given situation. Stereotypes, in some circumstances, can be positive but for the most part these conjured categories are negative, thus perpetuating a negative impression of who people are and how people truly act. I think on a whole, most people know that it is wrong to pigeonhole and thus judge people in such a negative manner. Unfortunately, there are so many of us who fail to even realize that we are using stereotypes. If you are not someone who is directly affected by a stereotype, it seems probable that you never ponder what it is like to be continually judged on the basis of untrue and in some cases irrational information.

I have assumed or applied the notion that all media is “uniformly and conspiratorially harnessed to a single, racist conception of the world.” (Hall, 82) I assume that the makers of this billboard missed the negative way it presents minorities. It was not until I was trying to find the billboard to include it in this paper that I actually discovered who authored the add and what the aim of the program is. The organization is called Grads of Life. The program places non-college graduates with excellent skill sets, that need minimal training in positions that would normally be unavailable to them.
