In today’s society, community and culture are all filled with different types of personalities which shape someone to who they are. A personality can ultimately determine the type of person someone is. In “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and “The Golden Notebook” by Doris Lessing demonstrate how a personality can be shown through colours, animals and nature, and how they have an ultimate effect on dreams.

In One Hundred Years of Solitude, Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula get married and decides to wear a chastity belt to prevent her from having intercourse with Jose. His dream is to be with her fully and when Prudecio Aguilar taunts Jose about their virginity, he gets very defensive and ends up fighting him in aggravation, ultimately killing Prudecio. Jose believed that getting made fun of for not being sexually active made “it was necessary to point” (Marquez 195). This demonstrates how he indeed does have an anger issue which provoked him and made him kill his friend because of his dream to marry Ursula. In Psychology Today, the article “Why We Dream” written by Hara Estroff Marano talks about why we dream in the first place. The reason and real meaning behind people’s dreams is because they want those things to happen in reality. Compared to the Great Gatsby, Jay demonstrates his dreams in a different way where he portrays himself to be a selfish individual because all he wants is to be with Daisy. Gatsby’s “unattainable dream” (Fitzgerald 149) is to win over Daisy by throwing many amazing parties, constantly wishing that she will eventually show up to one of them. At these parties, Gatsby always hides himself until Daisy finally arrives. This shows his selfish self when he disappears at his own parties and refuses to greet anyone but the love of his life. In Psychology Today, the article on “Why Love Can Make You Crazy” by Dena Domenicali-Rochelle shows how love can make you go crazy in relationships because you love that person so much and cannot live without them by your side. Anna in the Golden Notebook shows herself through all of her notebooks. Her writing is who she is, expressing herself on every single page. As Anna thought about her life, she confessed to her

The gift of humility is something that would be hard to come by during the 1920’s in the American northeast. One character in The Great Gatsby that shows the vice of overindulgence is Mrs. Daisy Buchanan, the cousin of the main character and narrator, Nick Caraway. In one scene from the book, Nick mentions Chicago and Daisy asks, “Do they miss me?”(Fitzgerald 9). She shows how much of a narcissist she is here by the fact that she is concerned about someone’s opinion in a city over five hundred miles away. Another critical character in the book, Mr. Jay Gatsby, shows his own insecurities by throwing lavish soirees to distance himself from his rural upbringings (“Great Gatsby Captures” SRC).…

The roaring 20s was all about celebrating great prosperity and having fun with big, wild parties. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the story is taken place in the 1920s where people are constantly surrounded by greed and wealth. Though it appears that Jay Gatsby is the most materialistic character in the novel because of his obsession with becoming wealthy and his flashy parties, it is really Daisy Buchanan who is the most materialistic because her wealth exemplifies her lifestyle, superiority and her happiness. One might argue that Jay Gatsby is the most materialistic character in the novel. Gatsby has always admired the upper class and has aspired to become wealthy from a young age.…

In the article “Manifesto of Surrealism,” Andre Breton says “[dreams] help us achieve a sense of fulfillment that reality steals from most people.” By using dreams as a gateway to achieving a sense of fulfillment we may get obsessive over dreaming, which can cause a conflict with reality since we will be focused much more on our dream world we created, rather than our real physical in which we live in. This causes another major conflict between dreams and reality since the more obsessive and happy we get over our dreams can make us null to the happiness we get from reality. As in The Great Gatsby, Jay was obsessed with the dream of creating a perfect world with Daisy he forgot about everything else reality had to…
