According to one hypothesis by the researchers, highly neurotic people were considered irrationally anxious in social circumstances and were expected to resort to silence to evade uncomfortable situations; however, the study did not signify neuroticism’s correlation with both types of avoidances. Neuroticism was only found to be related to fear of negative evaluation, which provided a natural connection between emotional stability and the desire to prevent social disapproval. Thus, the degrees of extraversion and neuroticism in the participants’ personalities emerged as the sole predictors of communication anxiety. The results failed to support any connection between anxiety and the other three personality dimensions, but the Hazel et. al (2014) noted this was consistent with previous …show more content…
In the discussion, the researchers stated that neuroticism indicated reticence in previous studies, which seemingly contradicted the results of this study (Hazel et. al, 2014, pg. 345). The article attributed this variation to the discrepancy of reticence’s definition as found in previous research. In this particular definition, reticence included the anxiety experienced by anticipating the judgment of others, which these researchers considered to be both a behavioral and mental ailment. The survey that the participants completed contained questions affected by this definition discrepancy, so the results would naturally differ. This difference indeed encourages more research in the field of relating modes of communication avoidances and personality temperaments to hopefully reach some consensus about their connection. A practical use of this research, as cited in the (article), would alter the pedagogy of communication classes, especially as they relate to stressful interpersonal encounters or public speaking (Keaton). Unlike the personality dimensions, communication anxieties can be reduced by having students identify and confront their irrational fears in communication contexts while also preparing through learning different
