Management can be seen as a job function to give direction to staff, provide leadership and to decide on how to make use of organizational resources to accomplish goals (Drucker, 1974).
In this respect, an effective manager should possess the ability to make decisions and to guide their staff towards this goal and assist them by providing them with the resources and means to do so.
While leadership and management courses often cite several key principles of good and proper management, research have shown that they may not be relevant in the workplace (Schor, et al., 2000). Arguably, an individual should analyse their own strength, weaknesses, personality, attitudes, skills and knowledge to gauge and subsequently improve on them …show more content…
Personal SWOT analysis
As an ENTP, this writer finds that he is particularly suited for the professional role as a TS. However, certain character and personality traits are potential weaknesses that can be improved upon. These factors are listed below in a personal SWOT analysis.
a) Strengths
The writer believes that he is intelligent, confident, innovative and logical.
In the current context, the writer’s role as a TS involves the use of derivatives (options) and bonds to construct portfolios to assist clients in achieving their financial goals. Combinations of different option types can be used to change the pay-off scenarios for clients and the writer is able to quickly identify and suggest different combination of options to suit the clients’ needs.
This process requires the writer to be logical in his approach and confident in the knowledge of financial derivatives and products.
The bank also publishes and updates its house view on different securities periodically. While the words used in such publications may be ambiguous and at times confusing, the writer finds that he is able to digest the key points and provide an easy to understand summary to the relationship managers for their marketing efforts.

Johari Window
The Johari Window is a simple exercise created by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham in 1955. It is used to describe an individual and includes what is Open – known to self and others, Façade – known to self but not others, Blind – known to others but not the self and Unknown – unknown to both self and others (Luft & Ingham, 1955).
The goal of the Johari Window is to enlarge the Open area in a process of feedback through asking (to reduce the blind area) as well as self-disclosure (to reduce the hidden area).
The writer enlisted the participation of several colleagues (nine) and undertook the Johari Window together. The following is a screenshot of this exercise. Image 1: Johari Window (Kevan, 2016)
Based on the information derived from the Johari Window, the writer finds that several key traits identified in the personality type (ENTP) is suited for the role of a TS. In addition, unknown to the writer (but known to others) are certain character traits that could have played a part in the performance of the writer (namely adaptability, dependability, helpfulness, ingenuity). These traits are reflected in the study by Deeter-Schmelz & Sojka (2007).
