This man was so stricken by disease that he looked hopeless. Siddhartha’s dad had insisted that any person unwell, extremely aged or deceased, the Prince was never to be told. When he saw this man, he was shocked. What was happening? The Prince experienced empathy for the man. The next sighting observed by Siddhartha was the corpse of a man as he was carried to the burial ground. The Prince had never seen death before and these things were mind blowing. Siddhartha inquired about the happenings and learned about aging, sickness and suffering in death. His heart was broken. The image of the deceased must have left a lasting impression. The fourth and final sighting was of a holy man, a monk. This man did not appear to be suffering. In fact, he looked at peace. His mind was calm. He had a look of freedom and tranquility. Siddhartha got the realization that the monk must know something about life that he lacked. Something that dissipated the overwhelming emotions he was now experiencing. The first three sightings showed him things he had never known. He was overwhelmed with empathy, fear, and confusion. Fortunately, the last sighting showed a means of overcoming the despair. In desperation to find hope in the pain, he left the palace with all the luxuries he was afforded. Siddhartha grew determined to find the true meaning of life. He sought to minimize suffering and discover how to obtain inner peace. The Prince left all his earthly goods behind him in a search for the truth about life. He entered a new life of self-indulgence and self-denial. After 6 years, he did experience his great enlightenment while mediating under a Bodhi tree. He had a deeper insight and appreciation of the nature of suffering and how to overcome it. He found peace. This is how he received his new name, Buddha.
