My husband and the teachers at the school that I substitute at motivated me to go back to school. They all said since I love being around children and good at teaching them, that I should get my degree in elementary education. Also, my university counselor Mary O’Brien was so helpful with getting me signed up for classes. She also motivated me and always told me she believed that I would be a great student. Motivation is important for student success because it boost the student’s confidence and self-esteem.…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…
Fifteen years ago, professional doctors told my mother and father that I would never be able to complete a full sentence. Now, it is a constant struggle for my parents to keep me quiet. Being diagnosed with severe autism at nineteen months were words that my parents could not bear to hear. With incredible conviction and dedication, my family put their lives on the line to save mine. Years later, there was no trace of autism to be found, due to the extensive hours of therapy and help from tutors, teachers, and my family.…
Describe your rationale for seeking a graduate degree and the features that led to your choice of the Human Relations program as the right focus for your studies. At what age do most people begin looking at higher education? For me, the desire to be a lifelong learner has always been a driving factor. I caught the learning bug in 8th grade when I took latin at the community college. But how to be a lifelong learner?…
A passion for working with children has always been a driving force in my life. I graduated from Longwood University in May 2018. I completed my Bachelor of Science and obtained my degree in Liberal Studies with a minor in History. I came across your advertisement for the position of assisted teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools and I believe that I am qualified for this job.…
SILVER LINING The first year of living after the Vietnam War ended in 1975 was the most difficult for me. When I heard my president Minh Duong, in South of Vietnam, commanded us to give up and hand the weapons to the North Vietnamese Communist Party, it felt like an atomic bomb exploded inside my head. My entire life, my body, and my heart fell down as I came to a free fall. For weeks I gradually got used to a new reality that my government lost the war.…
I have always strived to pursue a successful educational career. I dreamed for it, I planned for it, and made it happen. And although I have faced adversity, I maintained my dream to keep on growing. I recently graduated with my bachelors degree from UC Santa Cruz, which didn't come easy. But, proudly I can say is that it has been my most valued accomplishment.…
I am interested in becoming a substitute teacher because I feel that it will benefit me in jump starting my career in becoming a teacher. I am currently in my internship in the Van Buren School District and will graduate in December of 2015. I want to begin looking for a job right away however, I know that sometimes finding a job in the middle of the year can be tough. Therefore, I would like to spend some time substituting just so that I get the feel of a classroom and feel comfortable in the different grade levels. It will also give me the opportunity to work on my classroom management styles.…
In short, my experience has been amazing. I have worked a number of jobs that have been with school-aged children, but I have just received my credential in Social Science in January of 2017, thus my professional experience in the classroom is limited. A few…
A personal philosophy of education statement usually addresses multiple aspects of teaching, such as desired learning outcomes, instructional techniques, and ways students will be assessed (“Teaching Methods,” n.d.). As I develop my personal philosophy of education, I find myself reflecting on what the goals of education should truly be. I look at what teaching methods have been the most successful for both myself and my students over the last 20 years of my teaching career and what are my preferred educative practices. This is employing the inductive method (Knight, 2008). Understanding my role in educating children is important to developing my philosophy.…
I graduated from Kean University with a degree in psychology and once I graduated I started my journey wondering where it would take me. Knowing that whatever field I chose I would want to use my understanding, compassion, and motivation to help others. I had no idea it would lead me to teaching. I started volunteering at TRACE in their high school diploma equivalency program over a year ago and that is when I realized, this is where I belong. There is a quote by Harold Whitman, a philosopher and educator, who sums it up perfectly, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs.…
According to my mother, I was six years old the first time I told her what I wanted to do with my life. “I want to be a teacher when I grow up!” I said to her, and I’ve been saying it ever since. I had a brief flirtation with marine biology in sixth grade, and with psychology in tenth, but in my heart I’ve always remained faithful to my one true passion: teaching. When my high school guidance counselors began asking about my career goals, teacher was always the answer I gave them, because despite fluctuating interests throughout my childhood, I could never really see myself doing anything else.…
and I quickly realized how rewarding it was when I could get a child to think about a concept and get them involved in learning. I could also make children feel good about themselves and help their self-esteem, which is something I have always struggled with. This made me realize that if I could accomplish all of this on a small scale, I could do this on a larger scale in a real classroom setting. I was strongly supported by my family to become a teacher because I had the same love and desire to teach that they did. My mom was my biggest influence because she taught me how to be a teacher from an early age.…
During our principalship course, we had a very passionate discussion about how some of our colleagues perceive teachers that go through Teach for America or any alternative certification process for that matter. Some of my colleagues appear to be very bias in terms of qualifications and commitment of these particular teachers. I would have to respectfully disagree with them and perhaps I may as well be bias due to the route I chose to take to become an educator. Ten years ago, I chose to make the biggest decision in my life and that was to become a teacher. And the way I went about obtaining my certification at that time was through an alternative certification program offered by Rockford University.…
