Personal Statement
Anebi Adoga, Jr., Spain, ETA
I am inspired to serve as an English Teaching Assistant in Spain by my love and appreciation of Spain, by my previous experiences as a teacher, by a desire to engage in dialogue with people who differ from me, and by a desire to pursue a career as a lawyer who will advocate for the less fortunate or a government professor who will help create and teach about policy’s that can help the most vulnerable in society. I love and appreciate Spain because throughout my academic career I have had the opportunity to read, analyze, and write about Spain’s history and culture, while in the process attaining the ability to communicate with Spanish speakers throughout the world. Now I want the opportunity to express my gratitude for the role that Spain has played in my education by teaching some of its children to communicate with English speakers throughout the world. In my previous experiences as a teacher, I have engaged in dialogue with people who are different from me, dialogue that has allowed me to teach them valuable skills while at the same time developing my own skills and learning valuable lessons myself. Out of my personal appreciation for Spain, I want to teach Spanish students valuable skills learning while personally learning valuable lessons from Spanish culture

I want to explore ways to make a better social environment and make people of color and others be confident and secure of who they are. In the same interview, Mr. Rosen went on to observe that “there are things in our lives, that in ordinary experience are valuable ...and there are things that we confer value on by finding them valuable.” In the bustling airport, next to an ignorant man and new experiences trailing behind me, I learned the meaning of Rosen’s words. A realization was sparked as I returned from my first overseas experience. Next to me, in the terminal, sat an older man who wore a tattered gray t-shirt. It depicted Uncle Sam smirking, pointing and saying, “I want YOU to speak English”. On the back, it read, “Comprende?”…

Please draft your teaching Philosophy (max 250 words): As a Teaching Assistant, I believe there are two main goals that must be accomplished: keeping my own integrity and credibility in tact at all times and doing my best to assist students in their learning and studying. One’s integrity comes before learning because it is a virtue that take time to earn and can be diminished in seconds. I believe that as a Teaching Assistant, before I assist in learning, I must establish my own integrity to my students and relay to no-tolerance policy of dishonesty and cheating. Secondly, it is a teacher’s responsibility to assist their students in learning the best way possible. A teacher needs patience and diligence in order to help their students grow in their learning.…

Wearing my Jansport polka dot backpack, Hollister shirt and flared blue jeans, I eagerly opened the door and walked into the classroom. It was 2005, and it was the day of my first Spanish class. I sat in a blue chair and class began, an experience that can best be described as a, “baptism by fire”; the teacher, Señora Gunderson, only spoke Spanish the entire 50 minutes. It was a whirlwind experience, and I could only understand random fragments like “bien,” “azul,” and “hola,” and despite being overwhelmed, I was hooked. That day marked the first step down a path that would change my life.…
