Personal Statement: Classroom Environment

Classroom Environment I plan on teaching at the Elementary level specifically first grade. I think that the first day of school is critical in establishing classroom environment. Creating a positive learning environment is believe is done through establishing classroom rules and procedures and then following through with them. In Charles (2014) Wong says that by creating rules and procedures for students to follow and then enforcing them, you are providing “a safe and effective learning environment” (pg. 120). On the first day of school I plan on greeting my students at the door, immediately creating a relationship with my students. I want my students to know that I care about them, I believe that if students know that you care about them …show more content…
As a teacher this shows me that I will have a very diverse set of students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures with a multitude of interests. As a multicultural teacher it’s important for me to include all of my students in a lesson. It’s important to me that my students see themselves in the content I teach them. In first grade, books are often used to start off a lesson or to guide students to a deeper understanding of a topic, I want to make sure the cultures of my students are represented in these books. When my students get to do silent reading, I want my students to be able to choose books that include people from all over the world, representing a vast amount of cultures. On the first day of school, I plan on reading a book, a book that represents my students and their culture, to the students about accepting each other’s differences. I think that addressing race and culture on the first day is important. We all have differences just as we all have similarities, but we shouldn’t judge others by what we look like or what we believe in. I plan on sending home a questionnaire for parents to fill out about their child before the first day of school, I plan on using this information when planning my first day activities. In Charles (2014) Glasser talks about how it’s important to not only have students do work that is useful but also make sure what is being …show more content…
In Charles (2014) Jones talks about the importance of body language such as eye contact, facial expression and physical proximity. Both eye contact and physical proximity help maintain classroom management. When students aren’t paying attention and/or are messing around often times you don’t have to say a word, instead walk and stand right next to the student or stop talking and make eye contact with the student off task. These two suggestions from Jones make it so you aren’t disrupting instruction but you are still having good classroom management by keeping students behaving and on task. I think it’s important for students to know you’re the boss, if they believe this then they will look to you for many of their answers. In Charles (2014) Jones talks about how you carry your body. He talks about how students can see how confident you are by the way you stand and talk, if students sense you are nervous or afraid they will act on it. Students will also look at your facial expressions when you are talking. If an upcoming lesson isn’t that great and you say it’s going to be fun but your facial expressions don’t back it up your students will see that. I believe that your students will be a mirror of yourself. If you are excited about something, they’ll be excited about it. Same goes for the

This chapter helps teachers recognizes that teachers and other adults often send messages to children judgemental information that are based on the society’s beliefs, cultures, customs, and governmental systems. Although all teachers want children to succeed in society with a confident mind, their biased messages are sent unknowingly, and they are harmful to children’s mind. When the class is making a Mother’s Day card, it is a hurtful activity for children who have no moms if teachers ignore their situations. If teachers only provide picture books with specific races, children with other races would feel excluded. In order to avoid sending these unfair and prejudiced messages to children unknowingly, the chapter introduces the four steps of…

During the purpose and expectation part of the lesson, I taught my students the attention getter that we were going to use. I would say, “Macaroni and cheese,” and the students would respond by saying, “Everybody freeze.” My mentor teacher loved this and it proved to be very helpful because after the students would say their line, they would instantly get quiet and listen for instructions. I felt as though this attention getter was a great way to control the noise level in the classroom as well as quiet students so that I could give further instructions. I also feel as though walking around the classroom whenever possible was a great way for me to not only help students who may be struggling, but to also manage behavior.…

The directions and objectives for my lesson were simple and were clearly explained to the students. The students are already familiar with this style of instruction, because my mentor teacher uses it quite often. The students were instructed to locate and record their answer to the guided reading question in the packet I provided them with. The materials the students needed were the packet, their textbook, and a writing utensil. My mentor teacher does not make study guides for the students but instead does section reviews on the main ideas.…

In the 21st century, many educators struggle with classroom management and it is very difficult for teachers to teach a lesson where students are not being motivated or engaged. When students are not been motivated or engaged in the lesson, they tend to misbehave and interrupt instruction because their needs are not being met. According to Jones and Jones (2006), he emphasized that fifty eight percent of classroom time allocated for instruction is lost due to student behavior that disrupts their learning and that of others. As I read different pieces of information this week, I discovered the factors involved in why students act inappropriately in the classroom as well as what we need to implement as educators to overcome this issues. The topic this week relates on student behavior, how it impacts student learning and new approaches that can be implemented to create an environment that can be suitable for all students to learn.…

I believe that in order to have a successful classroom, a teacher must implement a variety of classroom management strategies to ensure that from September until June every single student gets the best education that he/she deserves. Even before the students arrive, one of the first things a teacher needs to do is make the classroom a warm, welcoming and safe place for each individual student. I want to make sure that from the first moment the students enter the classroom until the last moment before they leave that they will feel comfortable asking questions to both their peers and I. In addition, I would like my future students to feel like they can be themselves and at the same time accept their peers for who they are. When I do have…
