Personal Statement: Alpha Fraternity

My desire to become an Alpha Man has been driven by my life experiences and encounters with many of my past educators that are Alpha Men. I grew up in disadvantaged neighborhood beset with drugs, gangs, and many life challenges. However, I was able to overcome those challenges and graduate from high school in the top 1% percent of my class. My success was influenced by many men that are members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. These men did not portray the characteristics that the men in my community displayed. They had the drive and determination that I wanted to model for myself. I realized at a young age that I had to be different from my peers and the older males and that I refused to be a statistic and a part of the cultural norm of …show more content…
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead the civil rights movement, John Hope was the first black president of Morehouse College, Thurgood Marshall was the First Black Justice of U.S. Supreme Court, and the list goes on. Throughout my lifetime, I have taken on many leadership roles; from being the Brigade Commander of 2886 cadets in Atlanta Public Schools JROTC to being the Freshman Representative at the University of San Francisco. With having these accomplishments, I can contribute my past experiences of leadership to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. I not only know how to be a leader, but I can also lead others or be led by others. Alpha Phi Alpha is a brotherhood that is similar to a squad or platoon in the military; you are as strong as your weakest link. My past experiences demonstrate the same leadership qualities of the Alpha Man and that is one of the chief reasons I desire to be an Alpha …show more content…
will provide me with an example of what it means to be a man and a brother which is something I really didn’t have much of growing up. I can contribute my personal experiences and knowledge that I was taught from Alpha Men previously and in the future. Because of my past experiences, I am able to show empathy for and interact with many different individuals in a progressive, uplifting manner. The creation of Alpha Phi Alpha was for the advancement of African American males in a sociable manner. The members were driven to better themselves and achieve success even though others did not want them to. Many of the young males in my community and family are restarting the cycle of older generations by having a lack of expectations, motivation, and drive. If provided the opportunity to join this great organization, I will learn from my experiences with this fraternity and help my community and those who I encounter by showing them that there is something greater out there than their circumstances. All of my previous experiences, and those that I will be able to achieve, is why I desire to be a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity
