Personal Statement: A Career In Counseling

Personal Beliefs Statement In my experience as a Latina, I have encountered values such as Repecto (Respect) and Familismo (Familism), which seem to add stigma towards western medicine practices such as mental health treatment. The value of Respecto indicates that culturally we respect our elders, which may involve using folk medicine instead of seeking western medicine influences, when following elder advice. Familismo, refers to an individual worrying about the wellbeing of the family as a whole instead of individualistic needs, such as not attending counseling to facilitate the needs of the family. Personally I value loyalty, honestly, self-discipline, creativity, and the willingness to continue learning. I am interested in counseling because of my sincere desire to help others in need. My values and personal experiences that have made me who I am are the reasons why I am pursuing a career in counseling. …show more content…
As my aunts health care provider my tasks included helping her with her activities of daily living, and transporting her to and from counseling and medical services. During the course of this time my aunt attended various counseling sessions for the treatment of depression, and physical therapy to recover from her stroke. I noticed a difference in my aunt’s demeanor and state of mind after she concluded her counseling sessions and regained her strength. Seeing my aunt’s mental and physical wellness improve is predominantly the reason why I decided to pursue a career in counseling. I believe people who seek counseling help may be contemplating change in their life. In regards to change, counselors can aid these individuals by teaching techniques and providing resources. I believe counseling is important because it help someone improve on their activities of daily living and
