Now in eighth grade, I smiled, as I proceeded to continue helping my teacher put up kids’ map of the world. Picking up the next map and carefully examining each of the continents I thought, “This is what I love. I do think I will be happy forever helping others who need my help as a volunteer”. That's when I truly understood my love for volunteering and making others smile. Today I am here to tell you the story of how i discovered my love for serving others.
It all started in sixth grade when my student teacher from fifth grade had the honor of earning a job at my elementary school. Excited to see her more often, I decided every Wednesday morning, since I had late start to go help her and her students with their curriculum. I would start by and grading paper s and reading books to the children. I loved to see their smiling faces as I entered the room. Though none I have less time to go in and sort her library and grade papers, it makes stepping up to the task so much more special. On a cold yet bright morning I went in and helped her grade texts for her grammar unit. I sat at the desk scanning eachd the tests for errors, and when I looked up, I saw a face looking down on me. It was at that moment that I saw more than happiness, and what others needed, I saw gratefulness. She did not give me treats or let me read to her students, but she looked at me as a supporter of her, a little reminder that she was appreciated. I will never forget the feeling of making someone grateful and

Ever since I was little, I’ve always wanted to help people. Being a Boy Scout gave me the opportunity to do so. When I was eight years old I joined the cub scouts which began my life long campaign of helping people. I started off learning to take the oath to serve the people weather it be by the organization or myself. I assisted by selling popcorn for charity organizations ( The San Antonio Food Bank and The Knights of Columbus) or for money that we needed for our camp out trips.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

America. Before I first started the Service Hours Project, I would’ve described America as land of the free and opportunity. A couple days before the Service Hours Project was due, Mr. Wetzell said something that I never would've thought of. He said that our country was made up of people volunteering. From free African-Americans joining the army, to young children helping out at their local homeless shelter, we have built the pillars for which America is to stand on.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
