Late in December 2015 my father and I were looking for something new we could do together. We both have always been interested in target and tactical training with handguns. In late January of 2015 my father and I signed up for a gun safety class at The Place To Shoot in Portland, Oregon. They supplied a multitude of different handguns to learn with as part of the training. You did not have own a handgun. In February of 2016, we started to spend two to three days a month working with the professionals at the club honing our skills, developing our accuracy and arranging for further training with the professionals that work at the club. We have to follow gun safety regulations on the firing range with the ability to stage targets from 10 feet to 75 feet on the pistol range. All this is controlled by the electric pulley system that we attach our targets to. No one ever steps on the range. All pistols must always be pointed down range and we have to work with the range master of duty for our questions and training. My first “Aha!”moment came from the shock of getting used to the sound of the cartridge going off followed by the kick of the pistol. I had to make sure my iron sights ran parallel at the same level as the bordering frame of the sight. My third revelation came when I moved the target to its furthest position of seventy feet and I had difficulty grouping my shots. Guns 101 is filling with me more knowledge that I will utilize from now on. Video of the week, I really like the guys in the video. Along with the article of the P290 by SIG Sauer was a lot of information to take in all at once without having a P290 in front of me. Learning about gun shop etiquette was, for the most part, something that I already do as second nature. When “Steier, page 96” says “No one is ever shot with a loaded gun” is absolutely the truth, but I have never heard anyone say that.…

Growing up, almost every single girl my age played soccer, but I on the other hand, found myself spending a lot of my weekends at the Koko Head Shooting Range. I first learned how to shoot when I was 9 years old and since then, I have been utterly hooked. However, I never really talked about this passion with my friends because when most people hear the word “gun” or “shooting” they associate those words with violence and crime. But to me, this hobby represents so much more. Even though I always found excuses to not try out for the air riflery team at my high school, I still believe that shooting is an exemplary individual sport that assists in developing critical life skills.…

Today I met with my mentor and I learned how to properly grip a gun and how to hold it. I learned how to stand while holding the gun. Observations from the Firing Range I decided to take a friend and try out a firing range that had some extensive renovations completed recently. Previous visits were a disappointment, to say the least, but the new management had promised a new look and new experience. It was a quasi-private range that required membership and residency in the village to use. Residents could bring guests for an additional fee. Part of the property owners dues that residents paid to the village were used for the renovations and subsequent upkeep.…
