The Latino Retreat is an annual festivity which takes place at the Mendocino College. The Latino Retreat allows for Latinos across Mendocino County to learn more about their educational opportunities, different ways they can thrive, as well as learn more about their culture. This year, the Latino Club at WHS had the opportunity to attend the 30th annual Latino Retreat. Every year, a motivational guest speaker attends the college and the students have an opportunity to speak to him or her afterward. Introduction Throughout the Spring 2016 semester, students were expected to volunteer at the Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela tutoring program, which located in a primarily Hispanic community with the goal of serving its local residents by tutoring children to put them on the same educational footing as native English speakers. During this volunteer work, I was exposed to challenges that I was wholly unaware of in a community that is far more underserved than I realized. I agree that social workers should have an understanding about the culture and the concerns that are facing this population and if the knowledge is not there, then research would be a great resource. J. A few degrading words that people use when referring to Mexicans are; Wetback, Spic, and Beaner, whether American or not. They also have many stereotypes against them such as lazy, machismos, drunks and many more. One of the main reasons they are discriminated against is because of their illegal immigration into the United States. Mexicans were left no choice but to cross illegally to seek a better life, because of the cost and many obstacles it made it difficult to become a citizen. The population of the community: In the United States, 17.3 million of the population identified themselves as Asian and/or Pacific Islander heritage (as cited by U.S Census, 2010). Of those 17.3 million many of the Vietnamese, Cambodian, Lao, and Hmong Americans reside in California (as cited by U.S. Census, 2010). The United States is changing rapidly and is becoming a more culturally diverse population (Lemmon & Jackson-Bowen, 2013). A census conducted by the US Census Bureau predicted that by the year 2050, the minority population in the United States will expand by at least 44%, increasing the number of individuals that will be from culturally linguistically diverse backgrounds (Lemmon & Jackson-Bowen, 2013).
