Reflect
Joseph is nine years old and is in the fourth grade. Joseph has a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and has a physical disability. His physical disability affects his ability to move around and as a result, he uses a walker to move around. The school has no elevators so he needs a lot of support when going from place to place. It was definitely an eye opener for me because Joseph does need an assistance to assist him throughout the day and it was surprising to me that there was no replacement for him when his assistant was absent. It made me wonder what would have happened if I did not go to prep with him. As a teacher, I think it is my responsible to make sure that my students are safe and that their needs are met.
In regards to Joseph, when possible I will prepare him before hand on changes of schedule or routines. I will also make an effort to include him in the process of planning for the changes so he feels a part of the process. Finally, I will encourage him use his words to verbalize frustrations or ask for personal space when he feels like he is becoming upset due to a change in routine. This will perhaps prevent him from hurting others when he becomes
