Although people assume otherwise, I am Latina, and I'm proud to be a part of that community. I obtain my Latin blood from my father, who moved to the United States from Uruguay as a child. My parents divorced each other when I was young; however, when I was with him for either the weekend or the month of July, I embraced all the wonders of my Latin family. Latino culture entails prodigious amounts of cooking, and we always cooked Uruguayan food; it was almost taboo to eat out. From flan to the glorious empanadas, my family always ate homemade meals.…

I never knew a little girl from Guatemala could have such an impact on my life. We did not speak the same language, and it took two translators to find out her name: Lady Maria. While on a mission trip in this country, 9 people from my youth group traveled to Panimache, a village two hours deep in the mountains. I noticed her even before exiting the van, and instantly knew I would spend the day with her. I connect well with children, but she was different.…

Growing up in Peru may seem exotic, but it taught me to keep to myself, and molded me into a person who looks at things rationally. I had to learn how to protect myself by not giving into the things that the people around me were doing because of the perception that it will make me "cool". I had thought that July 17th was going to be a normal day in the life of a seven year old living in Peru, but instead I had to hear my Aunt cry and pray to God about “why couldn’t have her son just obeyed her rules and not go out at night”. I didn’t fully understand what was going on at the time, but I eventually realized I would never see my cousin again. After this traumatic experience, my family did everything in their power to make sure nothing happened…
