What Was I Doing
I woke up at eight o’clock in the morning like any other day. I got out of the bed and pulled open the curtains to see what a beautiful day it was outside. The sky was crystal blue; the sun was shining, with a slight breeze. I could not have asked for a more perfect day. I went to the kitchen poured a glass of orange juice; and made some bacon, eggs, and toast for breakfast. Before sitting at the table to eat, I opened the window to feel the cool early morning breeze. After eating, I put my plate and glass in the sink. I went to my room and picked out an outfit to wear for the day, but

I was terrified at the images I was seeing: black smoke and dust everywhere, and what seemed like thousands of people running franticly. I begin to pray, thanking the Lord that I was in no immediate danger, asking Him to keep those who were in the chaos safe and to be with the families who had lost loved ones. I remember my thoughts were all over the place: wondering if the world was coming to an end, how this could have happened here in the United States, and why anyone would want to cause so much death and pain. Then I thought about those who had died and their families, those who were in the building that had not been found, what the first responders were seeing and what they were feeling. I thought about their selfless act of going into the buildings to help complete strangers without knowing what dangers may lay ahead.
“Why now,” I asked. I was twenty-one years old, pregnant with my first child. I placed both hands on my stomach, looked down and told my son I wanted him to stay where he was, and I promised him I would keep him safe no matter what happened. Glued to the TV, crying and wishing there were something I could do to help, but with an influx of emotions, I became very overwhelmed. I turned off the TV, went to my room, lay down on the bed facing the ceiling and closed my

Today is going to be just like any other day, I sketched in my morning journal. The morning Baltimore sun shone past the skyscrapers of downtown, and light protruded through the silk blinds that covered half of the picture window in my room. I rose up from my queen bed. The sheets had become untucked and the comforter lay halfway off the edge. My back rested against the mahogany headboard with my head fitting perfectly between two of the wooden posts.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…

I was spring, the trees were blooming and the Mississippi had flooded like it always does every spring, which make the city of Memphis smelt like fish. We were staying in an area near Presidents Island, which was considered a suitable neighborhood and on my first night there was literally a drive by shooting, one of the neighbors across the street had seriously rubbed someone the wrong way. I was starting to question my decisions, anyway, I adjusted, an apparently I adjusted to well later that spring I discovered I was pregnant. Oops! “Wow,” was all I said when I saw my friends I haven’t seen all summer standing at my door. I practically hung out with them every day until my hectic summer schedule came in, so it felt like I haven’t seen them in forever, even when it was only about 2 months. It’s funny how you would think summer is the time of relaxation and hanging out with friends everyday. As for me, I stayed a busy bee, and did many activities to pursue my dream of becoming a triple threat, and getting my name known. One day, I wasn’t doing anything in all of the weeks I’ve been so busy, so it was a bit odd when my mom kept on nagging me to get dressed and ready for the day.…

As the season gets closer to summer the nights start to get warmer, and as the nights get warmer the kids play longer. Throughout lunch I heard about night games, which all my friends went to, and how much fun everyone had. Feeling left out I turned to Elli asking if we could do our own night games tonight. We didn't know if there would be enough people free after school to actually come. Afterwards, sitting at my house, on the stairs, waiting to hear any news about night games; I sent a text to Elli.…
