Personal Narrative: Vietnamese Immigrant

Growing up as a first-generation Vietnamese immigrant was difficult. My parents had little education. They spoke no English and had no understanding of the American culture. Nevertheless, they raised my sister and I the best they could. I was fortunate to have immigrated at the young age of 3. I understood nothing of the English language which made learning it much easier. I grew up healthy. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for my family. My sister, who was 4 years older, understood everything that happened. She endured enough bullying and name-calling for the both of us. At home, my mother suffered equally. With practically no income, we moved into a questionable neighborhood. Our neighbors were far from hospitable. My father had difficulty finding a stable job because of the language barrier; …show more content…
I graduated top of my class and was accepted into the University of California at Davis. I majored in the biological sciences. I was set on the path to accomplishing my dream. Unfortunately, life never goes as planned. With both of my parent’s health in decline, I needed to be home. With the little money I had saved up from my part-time job, I bought a used car to commute. Fortunately, school was only an hour and a half away. Unfortunately, in between schooling, working, and commuting home – I had spread myself too thin. My grades dropped dangerously low. I had graduated top of my high school class and now I’m at risk of suspension due to my academic performance. Financially, quitting my job was not an option, but I could not jeopardize my education as well. The only thing I could do was to take out another loan from school. With only a few classes left, I endured through my final year of college. Although my grades were not academically favorable, I was relieved to simply

It was a rainy morning in Seattle, and I wore my Army dress uniform. Stepping off the bus, I ran 100 yards to the entrance of the Airport. After I purchased my ticket and checked my bags, I headed to the bar. It was the time of the winter equinox, and I was headed home with my discharge in my duffle bag. I suppose I should have worn my civilian clothes, but I had been stateside six months, and the comradeship I experienced in Vietnam had yet to loosen its grip on me.…

As a young child, I was always unsure if I was more American or Chinese, or even both. I didn’t feel like I fit into any of those categories.…

It was a rainy Saturday night. I left my dorm, my stomach empty because I’d been trying to wait out the rain before going to find something to eat. But the rain didn’t end, and although it was quite late, I decided to make a quick trip to the store nearby rather than wait any longer. My umbrella was broken, so I put on my hoodie and tried to run as fast as possible. About halfway to the store, I saw an old woman with a folding walker, trying to get past the intersection while holding her umbrella.…

Luckily I made it to the hospital only to find out I had a brain tumor the size of a mandarin pressing up against an artery that was causing the blockage. Next morning, I had brain surgery and by the grace of God the tumor was removed and after much treatment, I’m still present. While recovering, at the hospital I vouched to strive for my dreams and live my life to the fullest no matter what happened. So once again I started school; however, this time I was paying for my classes out of pocket since I didn’t qualify for financial aid. With much effort, I was able to get good grades proving to myself that I needed to have that “hunger” in order to make good things happen.…

My coming to america Immigration to a new country is always a difficult decision, and whoever experienced it understands what kind of sacrifices people go through. When I left Russia at 18, I thought I was going to be in paradise. I thought I was going to live the American dream like I saw in Hollywood movies. On my plane ride to Los Angeles, I thought I was going to be just like Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City,” living in a big city, wearing designer clothes, and having a fabulous boyfriend. However, to my disappointment I found out that my life was not going to be what I was expecting.…

I remember the how the ring of the incoming call suffused its way throughout the room until all eyes found the source of it. I couldn’t wait to see what vermin we got to clean off of the streets today, for our moral citizens’ sake. I hoped it wouldn’t be a false plea or a call from an official.…

As an immigrant, my background is something that follows me and will stay with me for a very long time, even if it is something that I did not do. As an illegal immigrant, I was brought to the United States at the young age of five, and because of this, my life has been very different from most of my peers. I do not blame my parents for doing what they did. They wanted the best for me, and they did what they believe to be the best thing for me. I lived with the constant fear of my parents being deported, and my family separated which in turn made me into having a negative look on things.…
