Personal Narrative: The Person I Am Today

College Essay

Growing up in New Haven, Connecticut there weren’t big mansions, people with expensive cars, nor any sign of wealth .It’s a small city filled with homeless people, violence and poor neighborhoods that made me into the person I am today. A city so small you see the same people everyday. The neighborhood I grew up in you see homeless people on the street asking for change, mothers shedding tears over the lost of their children, children wearing the same clothes due to their family income, and teenagers hanging in the streets late at night. Living in this environment influenced me to become the person I am today. Hard working, tenacious, and humble.

What Shapes ME One says that the life of an average American teenage boy isn’t really difficult and is sometimes called the best moment of their lives. Is it really not that complicated? Can anyone achieve true success and really achieve the “American Dream”. Life isn’t really a utopia especially when you live in a ghetto community outside of L.A. where drugs, gangs, and crime is easier to achieve than a diploma from high school. For a young boy with Mexican immigrant parents deciding where to live isn’t exactly a choice onto decide.…

The reason I stand where I am today can only be thanks to the many exemplary role models and mentors that I had throughout my high school experience. Each one of these amazing people helped me shape my future in inexplicable ways, if it had not been for their constant eye-opening and thoughtful remarks I would have never left Houston to study in Greencastle, Indiana. Now that I am here, I can't help but look back and say a million thanks to the people who encouraged me and inspired me to become the best that I could be, not only through words but by showing me I could do what I set my mind to. This is the reason I have promised myself that I will be that role model and inspiration for the kids behind me. I feel that being an Advisor for Young…

I am a product of the many mistakes of my past, who I was, makes up who I am today. I am someone who grew up from being a shy, low spirited girl, who found comfort only in books with more pages than I could count, into someone who realized that unless I stepped out of my comfort zone, I was never going to achieve anything I wanted to do. I am someone who believes that it is necessary to step out of our comfort zones, get out into the world, meet new people and exchange ideas. One thing that's remained constant throughout my life is my unchangeable need to make an impact in this world. I've shifted from astronaut, to forensic scientist, to surgeon.…

The definition of the word independent means, needing, wishing, or getting no help from others, according to the “Thorndike Barnhart Dictionary”. The reason for me being the way that I am today is because of my mom, grandparents, and my friends. From an early age I was raised back and forth between my mom and my grandparents. Mostly my grandparents, but it was always back and forth between my mom and grandparents. My parents split up when I was young.…

We used to play chicken cross the road, I don’t know why we started playing it, it might have been the adrenaline we had once we seen a car and knew that we had to get to the other side fast enough or we would get hurt. When everyone was together we used to play backyard soccer where rough housing was only for the more mature kids. I was the fourth of six kids, During my childhood we would move from county to county due to my situation. Although we would move place to place I had my fair share of good and bad memories from each place that shaped me into the person i am today. If you want to talk to someone there’s always someone in my family who will be there for you.…

Who I Am I have changed a lot so far in high school. No one is still the same person they were in junior high, and definitely not the same person they were in elementary school. Everyone is always changing constantly and that is one of the most beautiful things in life. It is kind of like how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. The caterpillar is still the same, but it is just a better version of themselves.…

I wanted nothing more than for my pen to glide across its ocean-blue lines with ease, leaving behind a trail of words that told a story of who I was, a memoir. My life had never been anything short of a Lifetime Channel drama. How could someone with such a story to tell, be left speechless in the presence of a pen and paper?…

The journey from childhood to adulthood is not something that happens in the blink of an eye but rather within time. During the time of the event or accomplishment you may not realize how it is molding you. Many things have formed me into the person I am today and caused me to gain maturity and knowledge. At the time I did not realize the transition occurring right before me, as I look back I now realize how such a traumatic event created the person I am today. Many people think stepping into adulthood occurs when you graduate from high school and enter the real world, but for me this introduction happened long before.…
