The Outsider
Have you ever felt so different from everyone around you, even your own family? I have. It is my extended family.
My father's family is African American. Then there is my mother’s side. Her family is Caucasian.
So it should not be surprising that I have always felt like the “outsider” on my mother’s side. However, ironically, my sister is completely accepted by my mother’s family! I would understand it if we didn’t have the same mother and father, but we do. But, my mother’s family always seem to treat me different; sometimes, it is like I do not even exist.
When I am around my father’s family, I just feel like I am at home and a sense of belonging. With my mother’s family, however, it is the complete opposite. Whenever I am around them, it is like they did not even know I was ever born.

She knows everyone on my mother’s side; aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc. Me on the other hand, I only know my mom’s brother, her mom and dad and that’s all. I feel so disconnected from all of them, even with my own mother at

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is the kind of universal story that every single person can relate to in certain ways. You can either relate to the struggles of having an alcoholic parents, or draw similarities to parents who are absent from day to day life for one reason or another. You may even be able to relate to the way that Jeanette was bullied just because she looked and lived different than others. Her three children did not exactly pull closer to each other. In fact, still today there exists strain in the relations of my mother to her siblings, as well as in the relations of her siblings to extended family. Unfortunately my perception of the situation is scattered with bits-and-pieces of facts. Never having been excessively close with my aunt nor my uncle I have never been able to understand their reclusive nature. Outside of the unspoken implications this situation has on me I was also able to watch my mother grieve deeply, my brother grieve differently, and my father attempt to offer support questionably.…

Being in a biracial family is something I had never expected to happen. Growing up in a stereotypical Asian family, I was always taught to be conservative in our behavior, never be out walking alone, and to be cautious of the poor, Black homeless people who are often hanging around the slummy alleyways of downtown Los Angeles eying random passersby with either a gloomy, defeated look in their eyes or a hard, uncomfortable stare. As a result, I grew up to become a very cautious and reserved family girl. I rarely went out with friends and usually felt content with settling in my warm, serene home. The thought of becoming friends from outside my comfort zone was never something I expected nonetheless becoming family with a whole different race never crossed my mind until the one day…

When I was about 3 years old, I can remember my Grandparents lake house in Houston, Texas. My parents and I lived there until my grandparents moved into the country 2 hours outside Houston. Before moving, I can remember my mother taking me out to the lake to feed the ducks and always telling me I can’t swim in the lake because it’s too dirty. I remember going into the kitchen to get juice and spilled it everywhere and was found cleaning my mess while cursing because I thought saying “Shit” and “God Damnit” would magically clean the mess. I would grab a stick of butter and sit 3 inches from the television while watching the Teletubbies.…

Feeling like an outsider is something I do on a daily. Ever since I could remember I had always felt like I didn’t belong. Whether that was because I was taller than most kids my age, or I was always at least two years younger than all of my classmates. I had always felt different, almost as if I was supposed to be born in another time. The need to belong is one of the fundamental needs within all humanity as we all feel the need to "fit in".…

Our family is probably the most the most precious and treasured item we possess. It serves as a building block to a content a proper existence and is exhibited as what we need the most to overcome life’s obstacles. They teach us an abundance of rituals and skills that are very analogous to gifts in my perspective. My family, a unique one by nature, is a physical example of what most people would call bizarre. With their childish hijinks or obscene lingo, they give bizarre a whole new meaning.…

I was born on December 7th, 1998 at 7:45 in the morning. The earliest memory that I have is of someone (my mom, I think) holding me at my Grandma’s. My Grandma owns a farm up in Washington State and has horses, chickens, cats, and a dog. She has had the farm since before I was born, but her husband, whom I have never met, is gone. I don’t know if he has died, or just left.…
