Many of us have faced different challenges while pursuing education, and we have struggled with them for the longest time ever. Some of those problem and difficulties might have changed our way of approach after getting an experience to certain situation. The book “Learning to read” autobiography of Malcolm X, written in 1950s in Norfolk Prison discusses the issues he faced while getting himself educated. First year of college is an important step for students as it grants them chance to experience something new, something interesting and helps them to become independent. From my own experience as senior in high school to a freshman in college, it’s been so difficult for me to join social groups at college as I am a newcomer and none of my high school achievements help me develop new relations with teachers and students. Everyone that I knew said, “Integration into college life won’t be easy, and it would only depends on my ability of how quick I would be able to make transition into new role of a college student”. While on other hand my biggest insecurity entering college is my inability to fit into new college culture, and from some of my cousins experiences who are undergraduates think trying to fit in will cause me social restriction and contribute to more stress, depression, and lack of interest in studies and would create fear for public speaking. In fact, they advised me that I should walk up to other students and introduce myself, and not to be a student that prefer staying in their rooms or going to the library by themselves. Lack of friendship has made some students college life overwhelmed, isolated and lonely. As a result, they decide to leave college. In order to overcome this problem, we all should never be shy to talk to other students, to introduce ourselves, and volunteer in diverse college community activity. Students are not prepared for the academic workload at college and sometime cannot keep up with all assignments and homework as becomes hard for them to manage everything. As all courses requires reading and writing, and instructor expect us to have deep understanding of the course materials. We are no longer treated as irresponsible child. In addition, to academic problems the major one is to be self-reliant in time management skill. According to Malcolm X to be successful you have to work on yourself as he said, “Finally, just to start some kind of action, I began copying … Then [reading] loud… to myself” this not only improve his reading and learning issue, but also improved his hand writing. Someone I know start cheating on test and quiz, copying in homework from online sources, and ay the end as her GPA never improved had to leave college. In consequences of such choices she lost her creditability to instructors; as well as her opportunity to be educated. In order to deal with such problem effectively, she should have prepared proper schedule as that could allow her sufficient time for
