Personal Narrative: The Greek Mask Project

Improved Essays
Working on the Greek mask project was difficult because I wasn't sure how to begin and due to my lack of artistic talent. I was able to overcome my initial difficulties by looking at masks on Pinterest for inspiration. After, looking around I opted to go with the classic Greek "tragedy" mask and just add my own flare to it. The materials I used to create my mask were cardboard, paper, makeup, and leaves. To begin my creation I took a piece of cardboard and cut out the shape of a mask and two large eyes using a knife. I then attempted to use a highlighter to give the mask a gold shimmer, but the color wouldn't show on the brown cardboard. I solved this small dilemma by covering my mask with white paper so that the gold color could be discerned. …show more content…
I cut a piece of paper in a circle and drew the god Hypnos's head to represent my first accomplishment of waking up from my then state and doing something to reach my goal of attending college. Hypnos is the god of sleep and awakening and symbolically I felt as if I was in a slumber that I was finally able to awaken from, so I thought he was the perfect representation of me at that time. The second god I chose was Athena and she symbolizes my accomplishment of getting the grades I wanted by gaining the knowledge of how to control my time, self, and life. Not by any means do I presume I have Athena's wisdom, but I was able to gain some insight about myself during certain classes such as my SLS class. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and one of her symbols is the owl, so I cut out the outline of an owl to symbolize Athena. Lastly, I chose Asclepius to symbolize my future goal of being a nurse in the medical field. This goal is something that I have consistently been working towards, and the accomplishments I've been able to achieve increase the possibility I may be able to reach my goal. Asclepius's symbol is a staff with a snake wrapping around it, and I was able to recreate his symbol with paper and

The mouth of the mask is open and the bottom lip sticks out more than the upper lip. While the most of the mask varies in a green color, the eyes appear to be a simple black on white (or cream). There appears to be something in the mouth, although it does not look like it is teeth. I could be wrong, but from looking at several pictures from a few different angles, the left eye in the mask appears to be pointing slightly inward making the mask look a little…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

I never sang in a church choir when I was younger. Never did I stand amidst a group of children and sing fearlessly, knowing that any slight mistake of mine might be masked by a chorus of melodies surrounding me; instead, as is done in my religion, I sang alone. We call them shabads- hymns, sung of the verses written by our gurus many centuries ago. I was classically trained from the age of 5, and by 10 I was the child star of our church. Though I was somewhat introverted, my confidence shined through when I sang on stage before hundreds of people.…
