Personal Narrative: The FDR Memorial

Hi, I am going to tell you about the time I went to Washington D.C to visit my grandparents. My grandma and grandpa had originally lived in Pittsburgh PA, but they had moved to D.C because my grandpa was a history buff, and my grandma got a new job. My family planned to stay down there for a few days anyway, but then they called and broke the news to us and said that we could stay with them. We live in Morgantown, WV so it was only a three and a half hour drive. When we got to the city we had to drive around the Tidal basin before we got to the house. But that's where we saw the most beautiful trees in the world! We came in the springtime so all the trees were in mid-bloom.

When we got to my grandparents house we unpacked and got settled in while my mom and grandma made dinner and let me tell you,it was the best meal I ever ate. When we woke up the next morning we had breakfast and voted on which monument we wanted to see first and we decided on the FDR memorial. It wasn’t a very long drive from the house but the real challenge, was finding a parking spot. When we finally found a spot and walked through doors I noticed some writing on the walls and around the statue. I read a couple of them and realized that they told the story of the hard era he led America through. After we admired the bronze statue and got some pictures we went to the four garden rooms that represent his four terms.

From a distance, the Lincoln statue looked like a little spec that could fit in the palm of my hand. He also told me that Lincoln’s eyes and Ulysses S. Grant’s eyes meet through the Washington

Similarly, the relevance and specificity is important when it comes to symbolizing something valuable. Kirk Savage wrote the published book, Monument Wars: Washington, at which consists of this excerpt. Savage asserts, ‘‘The memorial itself contains no actual relic of Lincoln’’…

In 1861, the American Civil War tore the country apart. With over 600,000 dead, the United States suffered from heartache and violence. History of Richmond’s Robert E. Lee Monument Monuments exist for the purpose of recognizing a significant individual or event. They provide a glimpse into the past, reflecting the attitudes of the government and people at a given time. However, as cultural ideas and norms shift towards a more progressive view, relics of the past are called into question. In American history, some of the most disputed examples of this are the myriad of memorials that honor the former Confederacy. One such memorial, a statue of Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, was created in reverence of his qualities as a renowned and honorable leader, as well as a regional hero.…

In 1911, in the “Arts and Progress Journal,” the author is describing the importance of the site and breadth of the memorial and how these matters are of “national concern” (Source F). Moreover, the reader learns of the large amount of money that has been apportioned: $2,000,000 for the erection of the monument. The author explains that this constitutes the largest sum spent to date, but it is because it combines “grandeur and beauty” (Source F). In the end, the 1911 article illustrates the care and consideration that was taken in choosing every aspect of the Lincoln Memorial. As a result, Americans' witness how the creators built a “pure representation” that moves any visitor to have an “experience [that] marks it as extraordinary and authoritative”(Document A).…

Greetings classmates, A 3 mile run from my house is a historic place that was settled by the Timucua Indians, French and Spanish explorers. The run takes place on mostly shaded sidewalk with some dappled sunlight. Occasionally, I will have my iPhone with me for music and tracking purposes but sometimes I don’t bring it. There are rarely other runners when I run. The run there and back is a time of reflection to gain focus and clarity about the coming events.…

Visiting the Holocaust Center was such a great privilege to have, even though a lot of the things that were on display may have been difficult to look at. Remembering those that died during the Holocaust helped me to stay strong because I know that there were people that couldn’t do that. Learning about that terrible time in history is hard for so many people, but we do it in remembrance and commemoration for those that we lost. There were many things on display that were just simple enough to leave a deeper, more difficult impression. One of those displays being a large portrait of Adolf Hitler that sat, staring, in a dark hall.…
