Personal Narrative: The Dynamic Indicator Of Basic Early Literacy Skills

Improved Essays
For the first six years of my life, I had almost never read; not to my parents or even to myself. It wasn’t that I was unable to—I had to learned to read at a young age, and I did so fairly well—but the act of sitting for hours and flipping page after page after page. It seemed so monotonous. Then I entered first grade, where reading was mandatory. Within the first week of the school year, each student was given a small booklet of passages. Every day someone was called to the teacher’s desk to read. When I heard my name being called for the first time, I had an internal panic attack. I was a petite little first grader, and I had the timid personality to match my small frame. As I slowly walked over to my teacher, I could feel my face getting red. …show more content…
Budd, must have noticed how nervous I was, and told me in her kind voice that I had nothing to be worried about. She explained to me how the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) worked. I would read a paragraph or so aloud to her, while she marked any mispronunciations or any words I struggled with. Even after being told exactly what I would be doing, I was still a little uneasy.
I began to read the passage, and my voice was so uneven and shaky. I laughed to myself, and then continued reading. My sentences were a little less choppy the second time around, and I started to gain a little confidence. I made a couple of mistakes, but I kept on reading anyways. In order to test my comprehension, Mrs. Budd would ask me a three questions about the paragraph(s) after reading them. I ended up not doing very well on those either. Before I went back to my seat, Mrs. Budd stopped me and spoke to me about my poor performance, encouraging me to start reading outside of

S’niya, a fourth-grade student at Miramar Elementary School, was given four assessments from a Scholastic resource packet that helps to determine what level of reading a student is currently achieving. The Scholastic resource assessments allow a teacher to establish an idea of the student’s reading proficiency and also helps to conclude what sort of instructional plan would best suit the needs of each individual student. With the Clinical Educator’s discretion, S’niya was assigned to complete a third-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment, and a fourth-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment. Based on past test scores, the teacher speculated that was a possibility that S’niya was not working on par with her grade level.…

Much like James Stewart, my love of reading preceded my interest in writing. I would visit the library often growing up, checking out books in the mornings at the elementary school before the first bell rang or taking part in the public library’s reading program during the summer. When I had my tonsils removed in the fourth grade, my school librarian (who was all too familiar with me at this point) delivered me a stack of books at home, knowing I would get restless without reading material while I was recovering. Unlike Stewart, my love of writing followed soon after as a natural progression. My mother was a teacher at my elementary school, so I would often stay with her after the class ended, waiting for her to finish grading papers or write…

Throughout my entire school career, I have been frustrated at my math classes, but it wasn’t that they were going too fast; it was that they were going too slow. Every opportunity to move ahead I was given, I used. When I was given the chance to move up from Algebra II to pre-calculus, I studied for hours every day up until the day of the test came. “Beep! Beep!…

Two short weeks after my oral surgery, I got to go back to school. Wearing a new sky blue dress, I walked into Mrs. Sallee’s 1st grade class feeling like nothing could stop me. We started off the class by reading the Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor. We played popcorn, where the reader gets to chose who reads next. Mrs. Sallee started the book, then choose me to read next, as a welcome back gift.…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…

Just as I had assumed nothing could get worse, the teacher announced we were moving on to reading books. When the teacher made the announcement, I thought maybe this would be a good way for me to expand my reading skills. I had no clue the teacher meant we would be reading all by ourselves. Each student in my class was given a book once a week and told by our two teachers to read alone in the school hallway. Every time we were assigned to do this I would sit there in the long, dark hallway with a confused look on my face, trying to read and comprehend the text on my own.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
