I’ve known Taija, my aunt’s niece, since I was four years old. Not only are we complete opposites in our appearances, but in our personalities as well. She is tall, dark complected, and has wiry out of control hair, Often times her mouth is out of control too. Taija has no problem telling anybody —and everybody— what’s on her mind. It shattered into a million pieces. Her mom, Janae, and boyfriend, Brian, came running in a panic. In their true to form extreme parenting, Taija was in huge trouble. They reamed her carelessness while I tried to disappear in my world of uneasy awkwardness. In the end, Taija’s sentence was to write a 20 page paper before she was allowed to do anything fun —twenty long pages of writing about how she should be more careful with other people’s property. It was an awful day. Taija was understandably grumpy and I had no choice but to sit around and wait as she wrote her
