Health and nutrition, particularly my own, is something I have taken special interest in lately as I’ve come to realize I’m rapidly approaching the second half of my life and want it to be as good as, or even better than, the first half. If I were to be asked eight weeks ago if I was a healthy person, my answer would be a resounding, “Yes;” my regular physicals and blood work confirming my response. And while I still believe that to be true, what an eye opener the Diet Analysis project was, as far as understanding my actual nutritional intake in comparison to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of nutrients recommended for optimal health and well-being. The following paragraphs not only detail the Diet Analysis PLUS program used for this project,…

Calorie Intake As stated before, my client is a 22 year old female who is 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 135 pounds, and has a body mass index (BMI) of 21. By using the Harris-Benedict Equation in the Clinical Calculation box 22-5, I calculated that my client’s body needs a total of 1,989.60 kilocalories every day for energy (Lutz, Mazur, and Litch, 2015, p. 523). Looking back at my client’s food dairy, I can see she ingested a total of 7,000 calories in that three day period and, according to my calculation, she only needed 5,968.80 kilocalories, for the three days, to provide her body with proper energy to function. For the total three days my client exceed her energy needs, but when looking at each day, she did not met her body’s needs on day three. According to the food dairy, on day one she consumed 3,156 calories, on day two 2,672 calories and on day three…

Summary Throughout the Fitwell nutrition project I made many discoveries about my diet. Based on the Harris Benedict Equation, I found that I am eating approximately four hundred calories more than the suggested amount. This somewhat surprised me because I have not gained any weight since I arrived at college. However, what most likely put me over the top was my consumption of soft and crunchy white chocolate macadamia nut cookies that I so much enjoy.…

In a spreadsheet, I was able to track my meals and calories throughout three days. The spreadsheet was broken down between how many fruits, vegetable, grains, protein foods, milk, and fats, and discretionary calories I obtained each day. Discretionary calories are excess calories that we are allowed to eat once our nutrient needs have been met (Sizer and Whitney 43-44). Discretionary calories are usually foods containing higher fats and sugars…

In reality, the folks who look at meal content and calorie count, don 't need to. They are often the “skinny” people who don 't gain a pound. Things that taste good are usually jammed packed with fat, unless you are eating off the low-calorie menu. And because you eat off the low-calorie menu, you could be faced with the choice of having one large meal or two different meals altogether. I mean, let 's face it...…

What dietary changes would you make to have an optimal intake of this nutrient? Name the foods you would or would not continue to eat. What foods would you add to your diet? Protein: In order to have an optimal intake of this nutrient, I would have to continue to eat the tuna and the grilled chicken but even though the tacos, cheeseburger and steak had a lot of protein, it also had a lot of saturated fat and sodium so I could replace those with healthier options that also provide me with a lot of protein including: salmon, veggie burgers, lean ground beef (92%), and lean turkey/chicken.…

Another thing that needs to be improved in my diet is my grains intake. On the first day, I was over on my intake. On the next two days, I learned how to keep a healthy balance with everything that I ate. I plan on making these changes by changing my eating lifestyle. Changing my eating lifestyle means that instead of eating too many grains, I will eat healthier…

For me, the numbers were not all that shocking to me. As someone who does meal prepping, I am very conscious of what I eat because it will effect my results in and out of the gym. So to begin with, I did pretty well when it came to vitamins and minerals. I was shocked to find out that my vitamin C came out to 352% of my daily value! Coming in at second is my vitamin B12 at 250%.…

The calculated amount is higher than my average intake of calories, because through the three days my average caloric intake was calculated to be 2,313 kcal. My caloric intake is still higher than my average expenditure (2,305 calories) which is good, because it is only higher by a relatively small amount. In the section labeled calories for the day it was calculated that my total calories for the day are below my goal, but after comparing the two numbers ( 2,522 and 2,313) I’m only under by a fairly small amount of 219 calories per day. This is probably where I should be though, because I believe I fall in between what they would consider to be active and sedentary. My carbohydrates intake is also below the goal, but this was suggested in the calorie and fat report, because my AMDR for carbohydrates was at the lower end of the scale.…

At first I followed what my dietitian told me to eat, but as the semester went along, I got off track. Due to stress and anxiety about homework, I would snack too much especially when studying. My eating habit I followed in the middle of the semester was definitely not healthy at all. One day I would eat less and healthy; and the next day I would eat a lot and unhealthy. It was so hard to keep eating the same amount of food with the same amount of healthy nutrients because of my ever changing schedule.…

Eating Healthy Last week when I went to the grocery store, I found that the price of food was a little bit on the expensive side. As I walked through the aisles of the store I heard a voice behind me saying that trying to eat healthy is like a luxury, you know like getting your hair done. You do not need it, but you want it. We both chuckled and parted ways. Then, I started thinking that if I really wanted to eat healthy then it is worth paying the price.…

The Nutrient Report showed me a graph that really helped me because I was able to view my intake over a 3-day period. I noticed I was over and under during the week. I feel that’s because I’m so busy with school and work that I don’t realize what I need to be eating. On Saturday, the graph seemed to show the recommended daily allowance for each food group. On the weekend I’m more focused on my food intake than I am during the busy week.…
