Personal Narrative: The American Red Cross

Improved Essays
The American Red Cross is highly volunteer-driven and the Hawaii State Chapter is no exception.
The state of Hawaii has somewhere between 2,500-3,000 volunteers.

One of them is Penny Lindsey with the logistic team.

“I always believe in the phrase 'be the change you want to see in the world.' If we all do a little bit of something it makes a big difference. I really have seen the difference it makes, even though I'm not always front line,” Lindsey said.

She moved to Oahu with her family about five years ago. Lindsey and her husband wanted to get to know people and the island, as well as doing something good for the community.

(“I don't know why we chose the Red Cross. I don't think I even knew the different areas and all they did. I just

“People like different things. Some guys are strong and love to move stuff, but wouldn't do paperwork for the life of them. Other people prefer paperwork and can't lift. If you want to volunteer I'll find a spot for you. There is always something. If you like computers we've got database staff, if you like to work by yourself you can do counting by yourself. We got a whole variety of stuff,” Lindsey said.

She believes volunteering is good for everyone.

“It makes you feel good, and I think you're just happier. I definitely feel happier. I also think I look more for the positive in life in general. When you are focusing on helping others you are not focusing on your own problems,” she said.

Her co-volunteer Jen Kealoha agreed.

“It is good for the soul to do stuff for others - it is better to be selfless. At the same time you expand your horizon and meet new people,” Kealoha said.

Angie Navarro is new to the logistic team. She did several national disaster classes with the Red Cross a year ago, but has not been doing any volunteer work

I want to have the experience for a couple of reasons, some more selfish than others. For one I do feel that I have been very blessed in my life. I was able to get a good education and never have to worry about too much in life, and for that reason I feel that it is my duty to give back to my community and I believe that AmeriCorps is a great way to do that. Which leads into my second reason, and my urgency of wanting to do AmeriCorps as soon as I graduate.…

It was a rainy Saturday night. I left my dorm, my stomach empty because I’d been trying to wait out the rain before going to find something to eat. But the rain didn’t end, and although it was quite late, I decided to make a quick trip to the store nearby rather than wait any longer. My umbrella was broken, so I put on my hoodie and tried to run as fast as possible. About halfway to the store, I saw an old woman with a folding walker, trying to get past the intersection while holding her umbrella.…

“Yeeww gunna taaake awl dat?” the mealy mouthed Beaumont native asked me. A question that still haunts me when I think about a certain weekend I went camping along the Neches River. An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
