Personal Narrative Swimming Swim

They say swimming is 10% physical and 90% mental; that is true beyond belief. I started competitive swimming when I was seven years old. I loved it. I was never the best swimmer, but I usually did well in my races. As I got older, the swims become longer, the practices became harder, and the mental strains became greater. The challenges never bothered me too much. Then I reached high school . My freshman year, I was lucky enough to earn my spot on the varsity swim team. My main goal that season: earn a varsity letter. I did my best throughout the season and never came close, but I had one more chance at the end: the sectional meet. My coach put me in the five-hundred freestyle, the longest race. I trained for this race the whole season, and I knew I was ready. My race was only about five minutes, but it felt like ten. I was so nervous, and I panicked. When I finally finished the race I looked up at the time board with hope. Hope was all I had at that moment. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the time on the board. I missed my letter time by less than a second. I failed to accomplish my main goal that season. I had to move on.
Sophomore year came with the same goals in mind

I decided to change my goal for Junior year from earning my letter to helping others achieve their goals. I decided to focus on helping others instead of hyperfocusing on myself. I learned that I was much happier during the season, and I enjoyed talking to the younger swimmers about their goals. As the season progressed, I became more excited and confident for the end. My times were dropping; I was getting stronger. My confidence level was high, and I was sure I was going to bring home a letter time. I was in the five-hundred freestyle once more, and I was ready. I stepped up on the blocks, took my mark, and dove in the water. When I touched the wall I heard cheering from my whole team and looked up at the board in

After passing the qualifying test I moved on to the municipal lifeguard training program; which is a forty hour training course, a CPR course, and a written test. The hardest part of the program is the final swimming test; to qualify for a pool assignment, candidates must be able to swim 440 yards in 7 minutes and 40 seconds, or 6 minutes and 40 seconds to qualify for a beach assignment. Though out this whole process family and friends are making bets on the outcome. But I knew what the outcome was going to be, I was determined, all that training boiled down to that one moment. Walking to Penn Station I let out a sigh of relief, and hopped on the LIRR to go home.…

Susie was a typical freshman girl on Central High’s swim team. Living in California, Susie was used to spending most of her time in the water. Both of her parents loved to be outdoors and enjoyed an active lifestyle that they passed that onto their daughter. Easily passing though swimming lessons, the lead lifeguard approached Susie’s parents about the possibility of Susie joining a swim team. When your life is in jeopardy you usually go back to your instincts and survival is your first priority. Despite this some people are able to override their instincts and remain calm while saving others. "The Man in the Water" is a great example of this happening. I began to spend more time worrying about my performance than actually trying to improve it. Before I knew it, I had slipped into a hole of swim season depression. I counted the days until it was over. Despite my best efforts to avoid the butterfly stroke, my coach really seemed to think I had a natural talent for it. Naturally, the team’s butterflyer quit and I was chosen to replace her in the one hundred yard butterfly: arguably one of the most hated races in the swim world.…

As I crossed the starting line of the track for the seventh time, the timekeeper rang the bell, signaling that it was the final lap of the race. The light drizzle on that humid day, turned into rain and by the last lap had left me drenched, but at that moment, the rain did not bother me, nor did the fact that I could not feel the legs beneath my body. The two mile, eight lap race, would be the single event I ran in Track and Field, but it would redefine me every time I did. Competing in the race itself was already a culmination how far i had come on my journey towards attaining a more healthy lifestyle. Personally, as someone who used to be out of breath by just walking up a flight of steps, even the thought of just running, let alone in…

When I swam out I saw on the scoreboard 3.5, 3.5, 4.0, “ I GOT A 4!!” I mouthed to one of our captains, he nodded back. The next one was dreadful it was my front somersault half twist.
