When I arrived to the clinic Idalia was already waiting outside the clinic door. She said “Good morning” and smiled. I said good morning back. I asked her to let me turn the alarm off before I let her inside. After I turned the alarm off I told her to please come in. I turned all the clinic lights on and she followed me to my office. She sat down in the chair she usually sits in next the cabinets. She grabbed her arms and appeared to be shivering. I asked her if she would like me to turn the heater on and she said yes because she gets cold easily. Then she asked to go to the bathroom before we start. I grabbed a cup of hot water. I put my stuff away, sat down, with my note pad on my lap, and my tea on the table beside me. She came back in …show more content…
She said she looked up Abilify while she was at work and made the browser window small because she didn’t want anyone to see what she was looking up. She said when she looked it up all she really got to see was that Abilify treats schizophrenia. Idalia said she did not have time to read the rest because she had to go to a meeting but she said she went “ballistic “and was skeptical about taking it. She said that day she was feeling anxious because she had to give a speech at a meeting. She said she started thinking a million things like “I have private insurance”, “I don’t need to keep going to that clinic”, “I can get my own private doctor”, “I don’t have schizophrenia, why would he prescribe me that”. Idalia said she ended up calling a good friend that day who told her to” let the doctors do their job”. She said that her friend told her to stay at this clinic because she has been seeing Dr.B for years and this clinic knows her family history and has all her records. She said that her friend told her that she needs to stop fighting what the doctors tell her and that they are the professionals. She said that then she thought to herself that her friend is right and “here I was going to go again”. She said she was going to …show more content…
She said she had to give a speech at narcotic anonymous meeting about bipolar disorder. Idalia said she was anxious about speaking. I asked how she felt after she gave the speech and where the feelings of anxiety came from. She said she feared the stigma of being labeled "bipolar" and being “outted”. She said she never wanted to accept that she has bipolar disorder and denial has been deeply rooted in her. She said after the speech was over she felt good because other people were able to relate to her. I told her so overall this was a positive experience and she said yes. She spoke about how supportive is NA and her church group. Then she smiled. This smile is the one she usually has when she meets someone. I think I pointed out her smile but I’m not sure. She said she met someone, much older, and a Christian. I said “okay”. I asked her where and how they met. She said she knows him from group. She said she knows it’s something that they advise against doing but they’re just getting to know each other. She said she use to see him in meetings and then he stopped coming for a while. She said he was away in rehab because he had relapsed after 6 years of being abstinent. She said his drug of choice of alcohol and then said alcohol was never my thing. She said he is back at the meetings and is a recovering alcoholic. I asked her if she has had sex with

While I understand that she was in no condition to take care of herself and was potentially harmful not only to herself, but also to others, the amount of disrespect she was treated with by many of her health care professionals greatly astonished me. I have learned through reading this novel that not all medical professionals hold themselves to the same standards and that some of their behaviors are less than acceptable. Despite her mental condition, Elyn Saks is still a person with the right to her basic human dignity and she should be treated as such. I feel that reading The Center Cannot Hold will have a large impact on my future career as a pharmacist. I am hoping that from reading Elyn Saks’s experience and gaining a better understanding of what it is like to live with an undiagnosed mental illness, I will be better able to empathize with my patients and work to build a trusting and mutual relationship.…

‘Just one hour of this and you can go back to sleep’ was the phrase I groggily repeated to myself as I got ready to register for my freshman year of high school. Had I known that the mountain of paperwork I was about to fill out that late July morning would ultimately lead to me finding my passion, I would have definitely been a lot more enthusiastic. I traded all my information for my schedule, only to realize that there was one slight problem: P.E. was on my list of courses for the year. Physical education? I sought out my counselor immediately to fix this quandary.…

I finally told her that life changing health behaviors could be overwhelming at times, and at any time if she feels she is unable to meet her goals she should get professional help, not for the long- term, but to instill a better understanding of how to set attainable goals while examining her emotional issues which might have gotten in the way. The 5-minute session does not allow for extensive conversation after the introduction and dealing with the presenting problem. It is important to be able to wrap up the visit and still make the patient feel as if you are not giving them the brush off. She expressed concern about your weight, hypertension, and family health habits.…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

I am an alien, an Italian immigrant who first learned how to change when he was eleven years of age. I'm going to start off by saying that in Italy there is a scarcity of change, making personal development seldom welcomed. People remain in the same socioeconomic class as their parents; the son of a butcher is destined to become a butcher himself. People rarely change houses or move to new cities; a person is expected to live and die in the same small town. People are afraid to embark on new culinary journeys; an Italian is taught to only eat Italian foods, no exceptions.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

It was very early on in my existence that I realized I was entirely different from the majority – that I had been grasped by the demon, Different. I would soon come to understand, after that primordial seizure, that many lights cast an unfavorable illumination upon my inability to conform. Thus, following my inexperienced nature, I attempted to submerge my most personal penchants under the inky blackness of attempted assimilation, a machination designed to hide their ungainly refulgence so that I could blend with those around me. It was not until I realized that I was strangling my very identity that I resolved to adhere more strictly to myself, rather than to those with whom I found acquaintance. My situation was most likely exacerbated by the fact that my predilections towards knowledge, learning, and the constant desire to pursue the unknown were in stark contrast to the social norm, in which a taste for conviviality and socialization ruled unchallenged.…
