The sun’s burning rays beat down on us as we dug through the layers of Egyptian sand and rock. We had only begun the excavation the previous day and had already uncovered one-fifth of the ancient pyramid. I, as well as a team of high-ranking archaeologists, had accompanied Sarah Parcak in an expedition to unearth a lost Egyptian pyramid. “How’s your section of the chamber coming along, Erica? We’ve just uncovered a new sarcophagus,” remarked Sarah as she passed by, carrying a large coffin.…
In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…
First, let me say my mother's attorney, Laird Lambert told me in June of 2014 that Mary Ann planned this lawsuit in 2011. For what reason I do not know. I know Mary Ann was angry when I took my mother here. Mary Ann would not let my mother live with her.…
Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…
My sophomore and junior year I was part of the “Big Sister” program for girls lacrosse. During this program we got to chose a “little sister” who was in the youth league for lacrosse. The girls depended on us to be at their practice twice a week and attend their game on Saturday. I had to be a leader to my “little sister” by helping and teaching her during practice. I gave her helpful advice and techniques to use during her game.…
I am so grateful that my life is filled with wonderful people. I think the person that has made the biggest difference in my life is my caseworker Shannon Dean-Wilson. I have known Mrs. Dean-Wilson for about four years. We met through Safe Journey & APP (Adolescent Adult Parenting), my assigned caseworker. Since the day I met her she has wanted nothing but the best for me.…
I do not if you remember me but I’m Stephanie Espinal. I went to your office before the exam number 3 and talked about how can I do better in the mini-exams. I do not want to say that I give up on doing well in the mini-exams, but not matter what I do I still get a bad grade. This frustrates me a lot. Before coming to UMass I did have problems taking exams but at least, I used to pass them.…
Since 1950 I have worked with my many sisters from around the world as one of the Missionaries of Charity. Our congregation now has over four hundred foundations in more than one hundred countries, including the United States of America. We have almost five thousand sisters. We care for those who are often treated as outsiders in their own communities by their own neighbors—the starving, the crippled, the impoverished, and the diseased, from the old woman with a brain tumor in Calcutta to the young man with AIDS in New York City.…
Rileigh Deitemeyer A phrase I have heard a lot over the years is, “You look just like your father”, and each time my father and I would exchange a glance that to us meant, “little do they know”. This is because if you were to look at me next to my parents, you would have no idea that I’m adopted. My birthmother was thirteen years-old when she gave birth to me and was taking care of all her younger siblings in a household with drug and alcohol usage. Not being able to care for me, she gave me up for adoption.…
Over the past couple of days, I’ve had the opportunity to interview alumni of Tell City Jr. Sr High School, Hailey Carman. An alumnus is a graduate of Tell City, and Hailey graduated in the year of 2015-2016. Hailey has been involved with many of the extracurricular activities that our school has to offer. One of those is being involved with cross country and track. Hailey was a dedicated runner throughout high school and recalls that running taught her many life lessons.…
SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT For my Service Learning Project, I chose to spend an hour with a practicing religious friend of mine. Her name is Fredericka (Freddie) Beavers and I’ve known her for about 8 years. Freddie and I chose to meet on a few different occasions for lunch to discuss my service project requirements. I consider myself spiritual rather than religious.…
The owners kids sprint down the gravel driveway as I finish sweeping the main room. Today was their last day of school and I would now get to be their full time playmate. This is my second summer working for the Iris family. They bought me when I was seven years old. I remember being torn out of my mother's arms and hot tears streamed down my face as my mom screamed.…
My sister, Julia My sister is 20. She is beautiful and quick witted, and can be angry and insecure at times. She often feels lonely and scared, though she acts fearless and self contained. But mostly she is alive.…
#1) My younger sister has had a tremendous impact on my life, because even at just 20 years old she has overcome many obstacles that has made her more aware of feminist ideals and issues simply through her own experiences of these realities, despite the fact that she has never taken a women’s studies course, or any other college course. Her experiences and her willingness to share these, has educated me about these issues as well, and has also encouraged me to become involved in the field of women’s studies. When she was just 14 years old, my sister had a late term abortion because there was no way she was ready to have a child, financially, emotionally, or psychologically. During this time, she was also being severally bullied and harassed…
This week’s group was very emotional for me. While doing the activity there were a lot of different emotions that were stirred up. The first paper that was taken out was my sister and she’s literally my rock. I love her so much and she’s my best friend, I didn’t really want to put myself in that dark place in my head.…
