In the first few weeks of my father’s senior year in high school he was called into the principal’s office and he was told, “Mr. Bragdon, if you don’t start showing up for school I am going to expel you.” See at the time, dad’s single mother of four was struggling to pay the bills, which meant he needed to do whatever he could to supply the family with an additional income. So he went lobstering. In response to the principal, the very next day dad walked into his office and set down on his desk a stack of books and his check from that week. He then looked at the principal and said “Sir, I believe I just made more in one week than you will in the next two months.…

Marine Science has always been a particularly fond past time of mine. Ever since I was the mere age of three, while sitting in a bathtub, I had an inseparable fascination with the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it. From the otherworldly giant tube worms situated on volcanic vents, to the serene basking shark meandering through the current, all of it showcased the diversity of the world beneath the surface of the waves.…

Looking back at the dock, the security of solid land gets smaller and smaller. I think of how my crew and I had to lug our gear- diving suits, flippers, goggles, BSD vests, regulators, bulky air tanks and all- onto the boat. I turn my eyes to the blue abyss ahead of me, but it is not the soft light blue-green that we find at the shallow end but the deeper, more somber blue that represents the enigma of the ocean and the journey that lies ahead of me. Then the boat stops moving and it's time to get ready for our first dive.…

When I was just a little kid, I noticed I was not like the other children. I had a habit of talking to myself, and making up imaginary stories that I would act out in class. Soon after entering school, the other kids noticed, and would harass me for talking to myself. Since I was ‘different’ from them I was often left out of games and activities. As I grew older, I recognized that many other kids were ignored and rejected, and it broke my heart.…

As we stood side-by- side getting ready to go to the pool, he felt confident and I felt frustrated. I was frustrated about whether or not to wear my super nerdy rash guard or expose my enormous scar to the world. I was frustrated with myself for being jealous that he didn’t have to experience what I did. I was frustrated knowing that people’s worried eyes would be on me when I dove into a pool because they feared I would get hurt. And most of all, I was frustrated by the fact that we were not the same; something I had always pictured being a twin would mean.…

Little did we know that patience was going to be needed that day. We were packing everything in a zombie-like state, still half asleep and groggy because it was so early.…

How I learned to swim I was sputtering in the water, and I felt as if I were to drown. Some water got into my snorkel, and as I was coughing the water out, I forgot to hold on to the edge of the pool. I started to sink. With nothing to grab on to, I started sloshing with my arms as much as I could. The pool was not that deep, only five feet deep, but it was more than enough to be deep for me, since I was only seven years old, and I was less than four feet tall.…

SCUBA diving was the first activity that I chased as a personal passion. It was the first time I made a decision to excel in this field. I was only 12 years old when I went diving for the first time and the only reason I probably did it because my brother couldn't stop bragging that he had done it and I had not. Although everything changed after that first dive, after that first dive I came back up to surface and all I kept thinking about doing is going back down.…
