Personal Narrative: Science Olympiad

Improved Essays
Science Olympiad is the Olympics of academic concentration. Like the medal-bearers titled on the podiums of each event, only the finest succeeds and would be distinguished. It was not my destiny freshman year, and it felt like it never would be. Astronomically, how could I have not gotten anywhere with the calmest, universal passion? The annual event took place at Grand Valley State University on March 2011. Twenty-six high schools from the region of western Michigan flocked the campus to establish their minds to numerous events whether it was from chemistry, engineering, and even music. Experiencing the competition since seventh grade, I had assigned myself to astronomy, an event only opened to high school students. My impulse to succeed …show more content…
Shannon was my best friend and for much of my life, my only. A school year had passed and it was pre-Science Olympiad season once again. Every now and then, she had to deal with my thought-process and what tolerable way then during in some wooded trails on one late evening. “Seeing is for people who think reality is what we only can know from only one sense. I feel true if it is from within, to be enlightened,” I replied thoughtfully. “Are you throwing the Buddha teachings at me again?” She inquired amusingly. Mockingly, she said, “I am going to go beyond writing this Mockingbird analysis paper and write ‘How to Feed a Mockingbird’ using the sure power of God.” “You know even with everything we have to live for in this world, we are still limited as hell. We are a speck on a speck on a speck of emptiness,” I said …show more content…
We laid on the patch of leaves to see the poorly lit skies. “Look at where we live, even our skies are ugly because of the dehumanizing light populations,” I said. “Didn’t you go to the Dark Sky Park? Isn’t that enough for you?” she doesn’t understand my dissatisfaction.
“Yes I saw everything that cave people once saw. I saw what Newton, Galileo saw. It was bigger than this,” I practically avoided the question. “Why don’t you focus on just the individual stars you cannot see since there were probably a ca-jillion of them in this galaxy alone that you saw,” she insisted while forcing the subject towards me again. “Oh sure like it makes any difference,” I said as I put my gaze closely at one of them. I saw something that I have not seen before. “Wait a minute. Is it my eyes or is that star moving in circles?” “How do I know that and you don’t? Although I only listen to Tyson jokes, he did say it was because of the apparent motion of Earth rotating on the radio.” Immediately, my mind synced together. I did not truly comprehend anything that this astrophysicist ever lectured about, but I only picked up on anything where he uses green screen and special

n this episode, Neil Tyson talks about the speed of light, relationship between time and space, and black holes. William Herschel realized that some stars seen from Earth have seen the hands of our creator in his work. His reasoning is because it takes time for starlight to travel large distances, it’d be only “ghosts” or burned stars. Tyson then talks about the many concepts of Einstein. Such as the fact that no matter can reach or exceed the speed of light.…

Every few seconds it would send photographs so I could analyze its journey.…

Astronomers discovered a galaxy 9.8 billion light years away that creates an astounding 800 stars a year. To put this in perspective, the Milky Way produces two stars per year at most. “It is very exciting to have discovered such an interesting object,” said Gillian Wilson, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California, Riverside and a member of the research team. “Understanding its nature proved to be a real scientific challenge which required the combined efforts of an international team of astronomers and many of the world’s best telescopes to solve.”…

Dr. Ghez has been serving as the Director of the Galactic Centre Group, at UCLA for the last nine years and is working in the department of Physics and Astronomy where she teaches students on subjects ranging from star formation to the black hole at the center of our galaxy. After I finished copying down the homework I turned around to talk to my friends Benjamin and Vincent about Minecraft, when the announcements abruptly came on asking us to stand and do the Pledge of Allegiance than saying, “Are you interested in joining Pentathlon? “ In my head I wondered, “Man, what is Pentathlon? It sounds like something a nerd would join.” Then the announcements continued saying, “Pentathlon is a competition between all schools in the Garden Grove district each year students study in all five subjects math, english, history, science, and the super quiz which this year’s subject is science.…
