Personal Narrative: Riding Down The Park

Decent Essays
Riding down the hill. Picking up speed. Wet pavement. Need to slow down. Hydroplaning. Wipeout.
I clearly remember this from a previous long bike trip, and here I was thinking of doing another one.

I was in spinning class when I first thought of doing the MS ride. Tom, my 53- year- old brother- in- law and Andy, my 23 -year -old nephew would be riding for the fourth year in a row I could do it also. The ride would go between Pewaukee and Madison; 150 miles through the hilly countryside. Being in August, I was sure it would also be hot and humid!

Later that week I went to my sister-in-law Kathy’s house to announce that I would be riding for her, and to find out the details about the ride and the fundraising.

Sit back, buckle up, and get ready to scream because I love roller coasters. My family and I go to Cedar Point about every month in the summer, and my dad and I go and ride everything in the park. It is just so fun! The one thing I really like about roller coasters is that there are little rides for the youth kids also. My least favorite thing is when I am not tall enough to enjoy a ride, which doesn’t really occur anymore.…

This September I return to the saddle in support of the important mission and work of the Southern Tier AIDS Program. Please consider a donation toward this worthy cause. Last year, higher than normal temptures and a nasty head-wind on the back half conspired with under-training to knock me off the course at mile 72ish. It was a humbling experience being pulled off the course and riding in a car past my more fit compatriarts. Taking the lessons learned from last year, the 42 mile course is the goal this year, with the hope that I can push my post-40 body across the finish line and complete what went pear-shaped last year.…

My family has always been a sports family. Ever since I can remember the entirety of my life outside of school has revolved around sports. For my dad it was soccer, a sport which I played and enjoyed but unlike my parents, when they were younger, I had a burning desire to play hockey. Hours of running wildly around my house dressed in goalie equipment, finally convinced my parents to sign their 5 year old up for timbits hockey. I enjoyed playing the game for many years to follow, and still do to this day, but there came a point where I was not getting what I wanted out of playing hockey competitively.…
