The study of rhetoric today is dying. Thank You for Arguing wants to change that. By introducing rhetoric as a useful everyday tool Thank You for Arguing hopes to revive the mass knowledge and use of rhetoric in everyday conversations. Thank You for Arguing is an excellent book and by giving excellent examples combined with emotion and tools to use logic in an argument it excels in introducing such a vague concept as rhetoric and should have continued use in schools. Thank You for Arguing, written by Jay Heinrichs in February of 2007, brings rhetoric into another light that appeals to the common person that continues to hold a place on Harvard’s top 10 reading list because of its value.…
After recording my arguments for two days, I found that the purpose of most of my arguments was to try and convince the other person that my ideas were right and the best choice. In total I made six arguments where my purpose was to convince the other party. The six arguments I made are as follows; The best pokemon go team is Mystic and not Valor or Instinct, that 9/11 was not an inside job nor was it done by president Bush, that we need stricter gun control laws, that Trump should not be president, and that the education system for grades 12 and lower should be changed and made to be more practical for life.…
I will exemplify these skills by giving evidence of my conclusion from my Segment 2 paper. In the conclusion I addressed my original research question of “how do speech and language disorders affect learning and cognitive development in adolescents and adults? To answer this I said that there is no one word answer. I proceeded to address the question by saying, growing up with speech and language disorders has a lot of complex obstacles that people have to move part in order to keep on maturing in their cognitive well being. I added on that it could also lead to other issues in their social and intellectual well being, while battling the daily struggles of being demoted because of their disorder.…
Now, I can say that my communication skills have dramatically improved. As an officer, I saw gradual improvement in my speaking and writing skills. With the officer-led Forums, inductions, television interviews, and writing articles for…
How many arguments do you have on a daily basis? How many of those daily “battles” do you win? Jay Heinrich, the author of Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us about the Art of Persuasion, knows all too well about arguing manipulation because he is a father and a married man. By reading Thank You for Arguing will increase the win to loss ratio for your daily arguments by teaching one to argue the “right” way, use the right tools, and successfully manipulate Aristotle’s three persuasive tools.…
Persuading Against Persuasion “Thank You For Arguing” is a book about persuasion written by Jay Heinrichs. Heinrichs was a journalist prior to becoming a rhetoric advocate. He has taught persuasion in the Pentagon, at NASA, and several other important places (back cover). For persuasion tips and specific techniques, “Thank You for Arguing” would be a great resource; however it is just not high school appropriate.…
The art of arguing has been around for thousands of years. We use it in everyday life, both in writing and when speaking. Arguing has evolved to contain many concepts; Some of the most important concepts are setting your goal, avoiding logical fallacies, and using rhetorical appeals. Setting your goal in the book “Thank you for arguing” is referenced as Cicero’s lightbulb. Cicero’s lightbulb is setting a personal goal of what you want to accomplish from an argument.…
This skill has given me an advantage in debate class; it has helped me recognize fresh and unique approaches to common topics. I have become a better arguer by playing devil’s advocate, bringing…
As the owner of Shady Land Living, there was a time when I never thought this would be my career. I never imagined myself going for care giver / manager certification training. I had never even given a thought to care giver / manager certification training, but, then there came a need. My own mother was getting older and having trouble taking care of herself. As a loving daughter, I felt it was my honor to care for her.…
My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. After arriving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I started spending most of my time in the lobby because my room did not have air conditioning. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…
Should rhetoric be valued and taught in high schools around the nation? Rhetoric, being the art of persuasion, has the potential to benefit many students in various ways. The knowledge of this art can raise awareness of persuasion tactics used by different groups, whose goals are to influence the decisions of an audience, which in turn may promote increased academic success when related to a student’s education. Rhetoric can be applied to almost every aspect of life. As Jay Heinrichs, author of Thank You For Arguing, states “Whether you sense it or not, argument surrounds you.…
I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…
Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…
The idea that excites me the most about being a returner is getting to know a new housing staff. The late night chats during Fall training; that first set of rounds where you get to go through and see what everyone came up with for their hall decorations; the first weekend duty where everyone congregates into the office for the night. Getting to know my Lower Quad staff this year came all at once - it wasn’t a slow process like I anticipated it to be. By the fourth night of training I was having conversations with my coworkers that it would otherwise take me years to bring up. While these bonds will remain after the year is over, many of us will graduate, or find ourselves in other roles, meaning that we will have the opportunity to make those…
There is nothing more disorienting in a child’s life than moving. I moved twice in my life, three times if you count going away to boarding school. Moving made me disoriented, but the people that I met kept me going. I first moved when I was seven. It was not a big move.…
