The Journey, In Retrospect The whole semester of English 5A was like playing with Legos, but with literature. I would use the things I learned previously in high school and build them up with the new things I learned from 5A. It was very difficult to find the right parts and piece them together to create the “perfect” essay. On the other hand, I was able to learn the necessary skills to converse with the authors in the text, From Inquiry to an Academic Writing, by Stuart Greene and April Lidinsky.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Ever since I was a kid, I knew one thing: I wanted to be successful, I wanted to be someone important. Some days, this vision was the only escape I had from a severely broken home. I spent my early years taking care of my baby brother, something my mother couldn’t do, due to her severe bipolar- schizophrenic mental problems. My dad was to sick to do much of anything; at only seven years old I was taking care of a kid and going to school. I had to mature pretty quickly in order for my family to survive.…

Going to school taught me how to focus, set goals, and be accountable alongside like-minded individuals. I was motivated and encouraged by my educators and supervisors, some who even became mentors and life-long friends as my career changed along the way. With little knowledge of who I was, these people believed in me, challenged me, and modeled what I needed to learn. Once my undergraduate degree was achieved, I was randomly selected and received a full scholarship for my Master’s Degree. During this journey, I gained structure, insight, perspective, and the motivation to write a different ending to my story.…
