Personal Narrative: Pick Up Trash

Decent Essays
The first time I helped pick up trash was when I picked up trash when I was nine years old! I cleaned the ditch with my 4-H club which was Ashtyn, Lauren, Peyton, Sheldon, Brody, Shannon, and other members. First my mom and I left to go pick up Ashtyn and Lauren. Tracy came with us. Then we went to our meeting spot, the fertilizer place. Once we were there we meet up with the rest of the members. Then we drove three miles out of town and worked our way towards town. We talked while picking up which made things go faster. My friend and I found cool stuff, like shoes and some not so cool stuff like wrappers. When we finally got done we went to the other side and picked up trash and found the same stuff. Finally , when we got done

These volunteer services include altar serving at my local Catholic church, and assisting in packaging canned goods for the less fortunate at a local food pantry. I am also an active member of the volunteering club at my high school and the American Red Cross. Generosity was one of the characteristics that I attained throughout my volunteering experience. My whole community and high school thrive into better places for others today.…

How to Survive on the Streets When I lost my job, I was forced to leave my accommodation and became homeless in a matter of minutes. With no family to turn to, I ended up on the streets. Having lost my job due to misunderstanding (I think my job was a massive homophobe), I was unable to pay bills and rent, leading to my eviction from my apartment in 2013. I ended up living on the streets for a lengthy period of time. Drawing was how I passed my time.…

We split up and gathered what food we would need for the next few days. Shannon and Lily came back with Jiffy Pop and potato chips. I stayed with Mia, who located the peanut butter and trail mix. It is not the easiest to find something good to do with a dollar. You can’t even buy anything at the Dollar Tree because with tax, you are spending $1.07. You could buy a Ricker’s soda, I guess, but that’s not really going to make an impact on anyone’s life. With my dollar, I decided to exchange it for one hundred pennies at Payless.…

The Salvage Yard I have been going to The Salvage Yard for about a year now, and I have seen many things. I have seen a man pretend to have a heart attack, so he could get some attention, I have witnessed someone decide to give his life to God, but what I saw last Sunday just filled my heart with infinite joy. The Salvage Yard is a place that feeds the homeless or just anyone that walks through the door. Most of the time it reeks of poor hygiene and smoke, and of course the stench of whatever we cooked for them that Sunday, mixes in with it to make a smell that just makes your nose want to fall off.…

Growing up in New York City in the late 1990s wasn’t easy. In the midst of risks, such as gang violence and racism, growing up in an immigrant family was a never-ending journey of developing resilience against constant adversities. Growing up in two distinct cultural settings that emphasizes contrasting values, traditional conformity versus individualistic freedom, made you question how you defined yourself, in terms of not only cultural identity, but also your fit in society. Last year, I showed my parents a new television series called “Fresh Off the Boat,” which describes the childhood of Eddie Huang and his family, immigrants from Taiwan. Wanting to learn more of my childhood, I asked my parents if their experiences as immigrants were…
