Every day there are thousands of men and women serving our country in the armed services. They are someone’s brother, sister, father, mother, aunt, uncle, son or daughter. They spend many months and sometimes years in a foreign country far away from the comforts of their home, some without family or friends to thank them for the sacrifices they make daily. Since the age of four when I saw the cover of Time Magazine featuring wounded soldiers, I have desired to do something to say “thank you” to the troops for their service and show my appreciation for them. Living in Maryland, so close to Washington DC, you would think there would be a lots of opportunities to thank our troops. However, the opportunities are very limited for people under 16 years old. The organization Comfort for America’s Uniformed Services (CAUSE) arranged for me to sing at a Sunday Brunch for the wounded soldiers at the Walter Reed Medical Center. Then, I was invited by a mentor to help greet the troops at Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport. This is when I got to know Operation Welcome Home Maryland (OWHMD). Fortunately for me, my mom does not mind driving me to BWI, so I am able to help welcome home the troops, but not everyone has this capability. I have greeted over 100 flights and approximately 30,000 troops. At these arrival events, I help hand out goody bags to the troops. These goody bags include cards and a snack. Card for Hero’s came about from my observing how many cards are needed each week to support organizations like OWHMD and CAUSE to thank our troops and Veterans. The great thing is card-making can done by kids of all ages and right at their own school, after care program or other group gathering, making cards does not require any certain level of skill so anyone can

The people of the United States of America look to celebrities as role models, but many human beings do not see the great actions of the fallen or living soldiers, or anybody doing a heroic act for this country. America, the home of the brave and free, disregards acts of bravery because we are beyond occupied with the daily news of famous artists and actors. Americans citizens look to movies instead of the news. The United States feels empowered by movies, but it is not common to find that in a soldier. This “land of opportunity” is made possible by the fallen soldier, yet many citizens do not have the pride to thank them for…

Months in advance, they disclosed that there was going to be a writing contest on "Why are Veterans important?" Four recipients would be chosen to participate in the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery. Following this remarkable opportunity, I simultaneously felt inspired to prevail. The writing process was extremely easy due to the volume of passion I have for our Veterans...…

Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. At first I thought that it was like any normal 3- day camping trip, which made me extremely excited since I enjoy camping very much. Once I got there, I realized that it was a different type of camp. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing. The reason I’m writing this is because I learned so much about being open minded, accepting, and kind to other people and new experiences.…
