Personal Narrative: My Visit To A Synagogue

Improved Essays
For my interaction activity, I chose to visit a Synagogue with my uncle, David. During my undergraduate education, I took an elective focused on multicultural psychology, in which an Orthodox Jewish Professor taught the class. Though the class focused on many backgrounds and cultures, he would often give examples using his own identity as an Orthodox male. This intrigued me as a student, knowing that I had cousins and an uncle that also practiced a form of Judaism. I was not raised going to church and was never baptized, but faith was always something that my parents supported and encouraged in our home. We celebrated all of the Christian holidays, since both of my parents were brought up in Christian households. On my mother’s side of the

For all intents and purposes this congregational study completely unfamiliar from the tradition which I currently worship. I decided it would be interesting, and challenging as well as unfamiliar to my own tradition a Jewish Synagogue. My choice was Rodef Shalom Synagogue in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh, not far from my home. My intention was to attended a Saturday morning worship service, however, due to my unfamiliarity of Jewish services I consequently found myself attending a Bar Mitzvah. With enormous anticipation, and excitement the service surprisingly was very much in concept as a traditional Christian baptism of young children who have openly confessed their love of Christ, yet in comparison like nothing I had ever experienced.…

“Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat.” George W. Bush stated this about the cowardly September 11th attacks. During that fateful day I was glued to my poorly constructed high school chair, gazing in disbelief what was unfolding on Mr. Cox’s History class television.…

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. For my service project I chose to conduct an interview with someone who practices a faith different from mine so I interviewed a Mormon. Some might consider Mormonism to be part of the Christian faith, but I would readily argue that it has differences that are substantial and irrefutable. I had always wondered about the beliefs of the people who spend their youth in ties knocking on doors and several movies made the differences seem pretty extreme. I began to wonder what it is that they really believe and how they can make it make sense in the world that we live in.…

On October 30th, 2016 I attended Redeemer Lutheran church. I arrived there ten minutes early and picked a pew towards the back and started to take notes. The mass started around eight o’clock am and lasted approximately an hour. The service itself was similar to a Roman Catholic mass that I am use to. I was surprised that they were so similar because my thought process was since they are completely different religions than they must have completely different mass styles.…

The visit to Touro Synagogue was not my first time in the building but it was my first time attending the service. When I was a senior in high school my religion classes required me to visit a synagogue and acquire some history about the synagogue. A Life in the Day of a Jew in Hiding I awake at 6:30 to the terrifying sound of thousands of bombs going off around me and stifle the scream that always seems to rise up in my throat, begging for me to let it out. I wearily crawl out of the warm, cosy bed that has been my refuge for the past 12 hours and enter the realms of reality. I hear the gentle pounding of feet against the floor and know that it must be almost breakfast time. My family and I always eat our breakfast at exactly 7am: it’s when the BBC radio is broadcasted. I listen to the radio with wide open ears: hoping for news of redemption; dreading the news of…

It is so interesting to me that waiting there for the coming of the Holy Spirit with the disciples were some unnamed women, who probably were followers of Jesus. His mother Mary and his brothers. One hundred and twenty disciples. Those who were connected to the Day of Pentecost continued steadfastly in prayer (2:42). Also at Pentecost after the miracle experience, connected with the Pentecost, after the connection with Pentecost , after felling the Holy Spirit followed by the speaking of other tongues, up to now, the Spirit of God had been with the disciples, but how He took up His residence in them (John 14:17).…

I was introduced to my Messiah, Jesus Christ on April 10,1977 at Prairie Creek Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. The key text for the sermon that Sunday morning was from Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” In a picture in my mind I could see Jesus with His arms open wide, inviting me to be His child. As the congregation sang the hymn, “Just as I am”, I walked down the aisle and prayed with the pastor to accept Jesus and to make Him Lord of my life. I was water baptized the following Sunday. From the moment I asked Jesus to be my Lord, our friendship began.…

Three years ago I traveled with my colleagues to Israel. My stay was two months in Israel where I had an unforgettable experience. I visited many historic and significant places for myself as a Jew. To realize to this trip we had a requirement and it was that we have no choice to go to the army. The highest risky time I have experienced was during that trip in the army; the first time that I was going to defend a Country, I was on Israel border with Syria, and I carried and used a gun.…

On August 26, 2005, I gave my life to Christ, and it was the start of a whole new chapter of my journey. I still remember that night vividly in my head. The feelings of excitement, joy, and love were very tangible in my heart. My mom and dad were both sitting beside me on my bed while I was told the importance of this decision and how my life would never be the same. Even at 5 years old, I was aware of my decision to follow Jesus and accept him into my heart.…
