The Midwest is home to states with rich cultural backgrounds and popular tourist attractions. To take a break from the busy schedule I have as a student, and to avoid writing more essays like this, I went on a vacation to Michigan with my mother and two siblings. We visited South Haven, a pleasant port city on Lake Michigan’s east coast, and Detroit, the famous largest city in Michigan. These areas interest me because there’s plenty to do; there are amazing restaurants, breath-taking scenery, and family-friendly, inexpensive entertainment. South Haven is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and homely feel.…

All-Star Dwyane Wade finished the game with 24 points and became the NBA’s 41st player to achieve 20,000 career points to lead the Heat register its win number 40 in 69 games played this season. "I've been through a lot of adversity," Wade, who was Miami’s all-time leading scorer, said. "I've had a lot of injuries in my career that a lot of people would never have come back from - and I have, and I continue to keep going, 13 years later. And I thank my teammates, the ones that are here and the ones that aren't here, because to get 20,000-plus points you've got to shoot a lot of shots."…

One of my roommates in college was gay. He confided in me about his sexual preference, knowing I’d respect his confidence. Back then, gay people were openly ridiculed and rejected and attacked. I wish I could say this was no longer true, but obviously I can’t. We’ve come a long way, but what happened in Orlando and the reaction to it provide harsh reminders of how people hate those who are different from them in some way.…

He threw it to me of all people. Maybe it was my red cap with the letter “I” on it or my jersey, buttoned tight against my stomach, that boasted a portrait of Chief Wahoo across the chest. Or maybe it was the way my red and blue stood out in the sea of black and white and my gaping, toothy smile was louder than any shout; it was my arm that beckoned forcefully for the ball or my eyes that begged. I was so surprised that I almost dropped it back on the field. I attributed their loss in the next inning to my fumbling of the ball.…

The concluding part of the Cleveland Way leaves the hustle and bustle of Scarborough behind and returns us to the more enjoyable cliff paths. The coastal scenery is stunning, and with just over 500 feet (152m) of ascent remaining we can appreciate the closing miles and reflect on some of the more memorable experiences of our journey. Resuming from the harbour, we continue along the seafront around the South Bay to the Spa Complex. In 1626 Elizabeth Farrer, the wife of one of Scarborough’s leading citizens, discovered a natural spring at this location.…

As one of the biggest cities in the United States, Chicago stretches two hundred and thirty seven miles through the state of Illinois. Chicago has roughly two million people living in one city which is one of the many reasons it is unique. That is more people than the whole state of Iowa. The town of Chicago is one unique city compared to small town Fort Madison with the super structures over towering the city, the cultural differences in the food variety there, and ethnically diverse music are some things I can’t find in Fort Madison. When I think of Chicago the first thing that comes to my mind is; the multiple story, high rise, super structures we call skyscrapers.…

Another Sunday afternoon was right around the corner, and I once again found myself preparing for what always seemed to be the highlight of my entire week. This was otherwise known as, my visit to the Holy Family Pantry and Soup Kitchen. The journey to this remarkable setting in downtown Columbus, is a tradition that was commenced by my Great Grandmother and eventually passed down to my Grandmother, where it would then be her obligation to include her only son (my father) in this tradition. Once my Great Grandmother passed away, my father always seemed to be caught up in the large number of tasks that his work had to offer, so my Grandmother ‘Molly’ as we called her, decided she would instead incorporate me into this tradition. This weekly forty-five-minute trip to downtown Columbus was a journey that always seemed to be chock full of a type of exuberant joy that some people are only able to experience a couple of times in their entire lives, but little did we know, this weeks ‘experience’ as Molly would…
