“AURÉLIE, COME ON OR YOU'LL BE LATE!!!!”my mother rushed into my bedroom with super human speed, trying to get me out of bed. Today was the day that i was going to America. Mother and I had heard all sorts of things from the neighbors about a place called Ellis island about how heavenly the place was said to be, and about how bad it could be If one was to say the wrong thing. Me and mother barely had enough to support ourselves, so it took quite a while before we were able to get enough money to go. Even though mother had to work more than 2 jobs , and I the same, it took almost a year to earn an equivalence of what of what it would be for only one person to ride in 3rd class. My mother told me to go by myself, and that she would meet me there. …show more content…
Three hours later the boat rocked out of the dock, some of the passengers cheered, but some moaned with sea sickness. I could feel myself getting dizzy, almost to a point of wanting to jump overboard Come to think of it I would have if we were allowed to be up on deck with the wealthy. The boat was rocking softly from side to side, as we headed farther and farther from my first and only home. It was night fall by now, or I least I thought it was. I couldn't exactly tell since there were no windows, letting in sunshine or moonlight. I remembered dreamily, as I sat on the cold hard wood surface of the boats inner belly, a time where dad held me up as high as he could in his strong short arms and tried to get me to grab the moon. “ dad I can't get it your arms are to short for the moon's height!” I heard my younger self say in a whinny voice.”oh but Aruelie” he said as sweet as honey “my lovely child, who says that I cannot grab the moon right out of the sky if I tried hard …show more content…
A hot hand placed itself on my shoulder and for a moment I suspected to see my dad's face when I turned around. When I did, however, I didn't see dad, I saw the boys from earlier, each giving me a worried glance as well as their mother. “ are you alright?” said the smallest boy, “ we heard you whimpering so we came over to help you then you started to scream bloody murder” My cheeks heated as the other boy felt my forehead with the back of his hand, “you've been out for quite some there miss...?” he looked at me with a confused expression on his face, then over to his mother” are humans supposed to be this warm ma?”. His mother looked a little concerned, but waved her hand at the boys.” nonsense, leave the poor girl alone, she looks just fine”. The mother shot me a smile as her boys slowly shuffled back to their spot on the floor next to

It was an eerie autumn night, complete with howling winds and barren streets. Exceedingly few people had been audacious enough to walk the desolate streets of the Bronx, especially not at twilight. Not too far away, a family was in their small apartment. The young boy, Reginald, was huddled in bed listening to the angry footsteps and jaded voices that reverberated through their tiny home, scarring the wooden frame on which he lay. Reginald strained to hear his mother’s barely audible whisper, but could clearly discern the vicious, stinging sound of his father’s hand striking his mother, again, as he had so many times before.…

The sounds of gunfire were abundant like an intense hailstorm. The bullets crackled into the air, oblivious to their actual purpose. Each bullet fired eventually penetrating something, whether it was living or non-living. I wonder if the person pulling the trigger felt any emotions of compassion, sorrow, guilt or even regret. There was another death in my hometown of Ramadi, a father trying to protect his family from the jihadist group ISIS.…

Despite the horror inside me, I continue to walk unconfidently down the dock.…
