Personal Narrative: My Transition At Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School

Decent Essays
Sophomore year, when I looked back over the last two years I had been at Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School, I always doubted the changes I had made within myself. Whether I progressed or regressed was the question. I had always felt as if I was in the wrong setting. This perspective has changed, the mindset has as well. As a junior, I’ve felt the progression mentally as I continue to bloom into a young adult. I have realized that my grades don’t necessarily reflect on who I am, but my progression and potential, and in comparison to previous years, I have progressed profoundly because I now understand that what counts in high school is what you make of it for yourself, not changing yourself to meet everyone’s expectations. This idea of transitioning

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. For most students, the transition from middle school to high school is the evolution from childhood to adulthood. In my case, my middle school graduation was a quick transition for another reason. The first few months of my freshman year had my parents rushing my grandfather in and out of the hospital because of his failing heart. By this point my grandfather had battled off colon cancer, 3 heart attacks, and 2 open heart surgeries. At age 74 he was not a candidate for a heart transplant but he was able to get a defibrillator.…

Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…

In my opinion, my most outstanding contribution to Coral Gables High School is helping my peers stay optimistic when they have school related struggles. Whether it’s having to stay up late doing homework or struggling with a class, I advise them to stay positive and that their hard work will be rewarded at the end. A school is made up of its students, therefore if the students succeed the school is able to thrive with them. By encouraging them to stay optimistic in school, they learn skills that will allow them to become successful and proud Coral Gables High alumni.…

The rest of the year was great to me, I finally saw the rainbow. I gained many new friends and I was/am doing fairly well in my classes. I overcame an obstacle of mine that was really large, and I am proud of myself for doing so. I finally got to see what it looks like when the clouds part. I went from being a stress mess to a straight success (maybe not success yet, but soon).…

During my freshsman year of highschool, I made a long term goal to become the cross country captain by senior year. I listened to the upperclassmen on the team and took their advice as I matured throughout each season. I understood that in order to become captain of the team I would have to work my tail off. The obstacles that stood in the way included competition between other schools and whether or not I would put work in during the offseason. I challenged myself to get through these obstacles by working out in the offseason.…

It was the first day of school at Brooklyn High school and at some ungodly hour, my cold-blooded step brother,Alex, came pounding on my closet door, saying,”Gracie, wake up, it’s time for school!” My real name is Grayson Swift, but he likes to call me Gracie, especially in front of other people. As I got out of bed, I realized I had no nice clothes to wear. All I had was a couple pairs of old jeans, hand-me-down tees, an ugly sweater, and the clothes I had from my Mom and Dad. Those were a black long-sleeve T-shirt, of the Miami Heats ,of course, white nike shorts, and nike socks.…

The change between the beginning of high school and the end of high school occurs for everybody, but it truly amazes me how the person I am today contrasts so much from the person I was at the beginning of high school or even the beginning of the semester. Despite the stereotypicality of changing in highschool, I believe I possess something that most students do not, self-realization. This self-realization serves as the fuel for my desire for self-improvement. This self-realization is different than most because I believe I can see my negative qualities and my positive qualities. I, in turn, can then utilize my positive qualities to improve my negative qualities.…
