If I can overcome this, I can overcome anything My father had always told me, “A small setback is just only a setup for a great comeback.” I had played football practically all of my life, from Little League Football to High School Football. It was my freshman year of Highschool, and football season had just begun. There was nothing to stop me from playing football for the rest of my life, so I had thought.…
A hero’s journey is the steps of a process in which a hero is trying to accomplish a goal. However, the journey is about more than just completing their goal, they also find themselves and who they want to be. The hero encounters many obstacles throughout their journey that changes their view on the world and sometimes even their goal that they have worked so hard to strive for. In the book the Odyssey, the main character—Odysseus, went through his own hero’s journey. Along his journey home, he found himself fighting many different obstacles.…
The summer going into my junior year, I tried out for the summer baseball team. However, although I had never anticipated there would be a problem with my talent levels, considering I had played freshman and sophomore year, I did not make the roster. I was devastated. In the eight years of my baseball career, this was by far the lowest of lows. When faced with adversity and defeat many people decide to give up and quit.…
Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…
I acquired knowledge and skills when I earned a spot on the swim team at Sarah E Goode STEM Academy. I have been waiting since my freshman year for my school to have a swim team. Then they finally got one my senior year. Even though I am not the best at sports, including swimming, I had to be on this team. I tried out and I barely made the team.…
As a junior in high school my AAU basketball team went to a big tournament that is held at the ESPN’s World Wide of Sports complex in Orlando Florida. This the biggest tournament of the year and finishes the AAU season. Teams from all over the United States come to compete to be named the best team in the Nation. Unfortunately, my team did not when the entire tournament but we ended up finishing in the top twenty, which is pretty good considering that teams all across the United States come to play in this tournament.…
An Athlete’s Worst Nightmare Imagine you are going along playing the sport you love, when all of a sudden you hear a pop, your knee gives out, and you are on the ground in pain. This happened to me not once, but twice. After going to the doctor both times, they figured out I tore my ACL.…
When I was five years old, my dad took me to a sold out Basketball Jones show. As I walked into Quicken Loans Arena as a star-crossed child, my heart was pounding as I looked up to the jumbotron to Mr. Jones. At that moment, my heart lept out of my chest as he pointed towards me, beckoning my eagerself to the court. The instant I stepped onto the arena floor, I knew basketball was what I loved.…
At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…
I have known from a young age that I wanted to do something exceptional in my life. Something about helping others drew me in, so I knew a career in the medical field would be my best fit. It was not until a traumatic day in my life occurred that made me realize I was bound to be a nurse. I have played volleyball for five year, my senior year was not an exception. Volleyball was the only sport I played and my passion.…
I've never been quite the athletic type. For as long i can remember, sports have never been my thing. I’d always been picked last or second to last, in PE. back then, my inner pre-teen self would “blame it on the baby weight” or that i hadn’t hit puberty yet. But deep down i knew it was it was because I had two left feet, one good eye, and butter fingers.…
When I was growing up I loved everything about sports. I wanted to play every sport I possibly could. I loved the thought of one day getting so good at a sport I could be on a professional team. I wanted to play everything, I just needed to find the sport I loved the most. I decided to start with gymnastics.…
It is my philosophy that hard work will always pay off sooner or later. Whether it be physical or mental, the reward is correspondent to the amount of effort put in. In 10th grade, I had back surgery that rendered my back weak. I set the very difficult goal of regaining my strength and working hard the next year in order to make varsity the following year. My ambition moved me to go to physical therapy and give it 110%.…
Essay In August 2016, my family and I went on vacation. Every year during the summer we usually go on vacation but this specific trip was one of the best i've ever been on. In July, we were starting to plan our vacation, and we thought we should do something that would be fun and would be an amazing experience. So, we decided that we were going to drive to Roanoke and stay at a hotel for the night, and the next day, we would drive to Tennessee.…
