Personal Narrative: My Siblings, An American Citizen

Improved Essays
Growing up I saw all my siblings traveling to Mexico to visit my grandmother, but I was never invited. After years of asking to accompany my siblings, I was always given the same response, “No.” My whole life I believed that I was, like my siblings, an American Citizen. Near the end of my freshman year, I was sitting at my mom’s desk and next thing I know, my mom made me promise that I would love her and my dad unconditionally. At that point, I was worried that her next words would change my life as I know it. Unfortunately, they did. “Andres, you weren't born here, you were born in Mexicali,” she slowly said awaiting my reaction. She then proceeded to assure me that we are just waiting for my appointment to receive my Permanent Resident card.

Before interviewing them for this assignment, my parents have always told me that they wanted to come to the United States to give my sister and me a better life and more opportunities (a.k.a the American Dream). They knew that life wasn’t going to be easy because my mom’s family had told them about their challenges. As I heard their stories I realized that before we even left Ecuador, the immigrant bargain was imposed on my sister and me. Thus, they always told us to work hard and go to college because this would give us a better life. At the end of the interview, I ask them if I had kept the immigrant bargain.…

It was in the late 1980’s that the first of my family immigrated to America. Like most immigrants, they came to this country in search of a better life than the one they left behind. I admire my parents for having the courage to come to this country and start over from zero. For most of their lives, my parents worked in the fields picking fruit. It is a physically demanding job that pays very little.…

Even though these were unfortunate moments, we all learned positive things from them.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

My family’s migration story goes back to when my father was born in the sovereign state of Guanajuato in Mexico. He migrated to this country in 1983 at the young age of eighteen facing many challenges along the way such as racism and the fact that he had nothing to his name. His journey was long and difficult as he traveled alongside his cousin and a coyote leading the way. Although my father did not enter the country in a way that is considered “legal” he felt he needed to in order to attempt to achieve a better life.
