Personal Narrative: My Knee Injury

Improved Essays
One of the biggest issues I have dealt with was my knee injury nearly three years ago. From a young age, I have been involved in volleyball. I first began playing rec volleyball which kept me active and didn’t take up a lot of extra time. Then when I got to high school, volleyball began to take up more and more of my time. For nearly two years I participated in volleyball year-round and was becoming a good all-around player, and my coaches were starting to recognize that. But this all changed one away volleyball match. Our team was behind, but we were slowly coming back. I went up to block and when I landed I landed on my teammate’s foot. I crumbled to the ground after my knee made a deep pop sound. This is especially true in high school athletes since they are the most common age, fourteen to twenty, to have ACL injuries (McDaniel et al. 2010: 15). There is currently no focus or program available to make high school athletes aware how their physical health can put them at risk for injury. The risk can be reduced by creating easy programs that help athletes learn how to stretch and strengthen their knees to help prevent future injuries. If these programs do not exist athletes will continue to experience life altering injuries that sometimes require surgeries. In David Swenson’s research, he notes that knee injuries are the most likely to be handled with surgery, and around twenty one percent of knee injuries in high school athletes are treated with surgery (Swenson, Collins, Best, Flanigan, Fields, and Comstock 2014: 6). In some cases, a surgery can be avoided by reducing physical activity or knee brace, but is different for every knee injury. Then many times after a knee surgery, there is a long recovery, which can cause some athletes to hesitate in getting the treatment that they need to be able to safely play the sport

This study seeks to explore and explain why ACL injuries are more prevalent in female athletes. At Hillsborough High School, student athletes try their best during practice in order to prepare themselves for games, but even though the exercise helps students stay healthy and fit, it makes these athletes more vulnerable to sports injuries, which can affect the student. Students with sports injuries who have received help as soon as possible are able to get back into practice and games within a week. But, athletes hate when they have to sit on the sidelines or be benched. So, when students choose to keep injuries to themselves, they may cause the injury to worsen, which makes them have to wait weeks or even when the season ends to recover, causing more disappointment and fear than when they first got injured. “We try to educate our students…
