Personal Narrative: My Journey To The Metropolitan Museum

Decent Essays
The first time I truly experienced art and museums would be when I took a family vacation to New York the summer before my freshman year of high school. I remember walking up the steps to the Metropolitan Museum and having my breath taken away when I walked through the door. I remember being in awe as I walked around and thinking I could spend years here and still not see everything I wanted to. It was the summer that my passion to work in a museum started to grow and this desire would be with me for the rest of my high school career as I applied to colleges. Before I ever thought about going to school to study art history I used to want to be an English or art teacher. I always enjoyed these classes when I was younger because I was able to …show more content…
I have always been willing to babysit or just play with kids because they always look up those who are older than them especially when I was in high school I noticed this and it really amazed me. If I was accepted into this internship program I would contribute my strong work ethic, my willingness to learn, my passion for art, and my problem solving skills. I am willing to go the extra mile for any cause and am always giving my best effort to help those around me succeed as well. From this internship I hope to acquire new skills, learn more about how museums are run, and experiences I would never get living in the small town of Sheffield, Iowa. I believe this internship would also teach me more hands on skills I would need to have for a career in a museum. This experience would be considerably different from my time working as a gallery intern for the ISU Student Activities Center. I think this would allow me to see and experience what it is like to work in a real museum and grow my passion for art even more. This internship would develop skills I never even knew I had and could develop me to become a better leader, listener, and present myself in an even more professional

My trip to the Barnes Foundation museum was enjoyable and informative. On my trip, as we moved through the galleria I was astounded by how the rooms in the galleria were arranged. It was not like your average museum, with one or two paintings on the walls with a description of it underneath. Instead, there were rooms with paints all over the walls, along with iron work that correlated with the pieces. Our tour guide elaborated on how he did not wish for there to be a description under the pieces of art stating their background.…

Since a very young age, art has always been one of my major interests. I found joy in getting my hands messy with the paint and then transforming a white piece of paper into a something more than that with a rainbow of colors. In school, I always made sure to take all the possible art classes that were available and would fit my schedule. I also began to get more in involved in after school clubs such as the National Art Honor Society and the SmART Club where we did several art projects every week. On my last year of high school I decided to challenge myself and I took AP Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio.…

In this essay, I am going to examine my tasks at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, various things I learned, along with some challenges and opportunities I gained. I am also going to elaborate on how this internship changed my career goals. I performed a variety of tasks at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research as an exhibition intern. The Dallas Museum of Art was the complete opposite of what I imagined it to be like. Before attending the museum, I had very low expectations. When I thought of “art museum” I imagined dusty walls lined with undiverse and outdated art. I imagined a place old couples went to because they had nothing better to do with their time. A place where the past lingered and grew old as civilization quickly moved on and forgot about it.…

It was quite hard and also very long considering its a short term semester. I had always taken classes in person at IVC, so the first day of this course, I felt like the first day of class for a three-year-old girl, I had no idea what the subject was really about. And reading the class objectives about being able to identify those pictures. I had never been able to do so, only in this one Art 100 course. My favorite so far was Art in Egypt and the Middle East, Classical Art in Antiquity, and Classical Culture, were really beautiful subjects.…

On October 16th, I made my way to a cultural event. The event was called “Home, Memory, and Future”, when I heard the name of it I believed it was based on the beliefs of people in other words their religions or their culture. As I read the introduction I realized it was about Harlem, which is located only a couple stops from home. Then I wondered what kind of cultural events have happened in Harlem, instantly I thought of the word diversity. In New York, there are many people that come from different backgrounds, they come to comfort themselves with what they believe.…

I have always had a passion for history and storytelling since I was a child and decided in seventh grade world history class that I wanted to be an archaeologist, discovering ancient cultures and uncovering their secrets. I maintained this plan, arriving at Boston University as an archaeology major but after several semesters of study realized that it wasn’t the exact path for me. I began to grow my appreciation of museums, admiring how they could ignite wonder, curiosity, and learning in myself and others. I realized this was where I felt most at home. Therefore, I decided to change my major to art history, while retaining an archaeology minor, and explore history through the lens of artist’s interpretations and ideas.…
