We had to deal with a new environment, people, and culture. My parents, unfortunately, could not get their old jobs back as the degrees from Kyrgyzstan were not valid in America. This meant that everything my parents had worked for has been lost and they had to find alternatives. Fortunately, they found different jobs and worked really hard to meet ends meet. For the first few months in America we had to sleep on the floor together as a family. This was strangely comforting as I was huddled together with my sister and my parents, where we were all ready to face the "new world". I was soon placed into an elementary school where I had to assimilate with the kids and learn English. Picking up English was the easy part, as I was able to learn English in a few months but assimilating with the kids was the hard part. I did not know how to act with all the other kids at school, and this led to me not really connecting with the other kids. Most of the friends I made in elementary were kids who I could relate to. My parents wanted me to try my best in school and go out prepared. I did not have good grades in my first year at school, as I was still adjusting to my new life. I tried my hardest to improve my grades and to improve my chances at building a better future for myself. Although I think I could have tried harder, I think I improved over the years in school
