I arrived at Rancho Buena Vista High School at 12:00 pm. I waited in a line for about 20 minutes until I reached to the security section. Before we could enter Rancho Buena Vista’s Stadium, we had to be checked for weapons or anything dangerous. I took everything from my pockets and placed them on the table where the securities took a look. Then I was patted down and walked through a metal detector.…

The town that I grew up in is known for being a very diverse town – the high school that I graduated from back in Clifton, New Jersey, had around 3,300 students enrolled from many different backgrounds, races, nationalities, class, and religions. Walking through the hallway of Clifton High School one would hear many different languages and see many people who look exceptionally different from one another. Because the high school had many students from different backgrounds and wanted the students to be well aware and accepting of this, the school offered various clubs and organizations such as: sports teams, French, Spanish, and Italian clubs, a cheerleading team, and even a pep band. These clubs and organizations allowed many students of different…

Diversity is a key element for a proper learning environment; students must be amongst people of other backgrounds to be exposed to the variation in the real world. In the scientific community, collaboration with others is necessary, and often, they come from an alternate way of life. Working with someone who may be different in many ways has numerous benefits; they may be able to propose ideas that you had not previously considered, or they could inform you of something that has the potential to assist you later in life. Living in a diverse setting not only an educational benefit, but it also aids in the preparation for the real world. We live in an extremely diverse location, with people immigrating from various places around the world.…

My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. After arriving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I started spending most of my time in the lobby because my room did not have air conditioning. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…

“Education is the most powerful weapon in which you can use to change the world” is a quote from Nelson Mandela. Fall of 2013 I started the Early College Alliance, otherwise known as ECA. For those who do not know, when you first start ECA you take High School level classes, with other High Schoolers during your first semester. After teachers review your progress you’ll either be placed in College classes, because you’re what they call, “College Ready,” or you’ll take another semester of High School classes. During my second year of ECA, I was placed in EMU College classes. During this time I was exposed to an environment in which I was interacting with adults in a classroom setting, versus being in school with students in my age group.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

Diversity adds color and interest to the world as different people and cultures share ideas, traditions, and values. Unfortunately, at times diversity is not accepted. Diversity is a topic that not everyone takes caution for, yet it is a critical aspect in today’s society. In my perspective, diversity is very important because it recognizes people with different backgrounds, skills, experiences, and attitudes as well as conveys new, unaccustomed ideas. In my personal experience, diversity plays a significant role in showing how I’ve developed throughout my life, not only personality-wise, but how my social skills have taken a turn for the better as well. I was raised in a family who always strived to keep me in a culturally and physically diverse environment, specifically where many people had short term assignments working for an international company which allowed me to learn from a copious amount of…

My personal experience with diversity was an event that stuck with me in a profound way occurred a few years ago. I once considered myself aware of the differences in people having worked for a company that was committed to diversity because I had attended classes and training to better understand the differences among people. As a foster parent I have helped and mentored many families. One family has remained close in my heart for the last 17 years. When the children returned home I stayed involved and when the mom had more children I still stayed involved because I recognized there were issues within the family.…

It all started when I was thirteen years old. I went to St.Dogans middle school in Denver Colorado around the year 1997. In every school there is a group of friends but for me,I wasn't very popular, and I didn't have very many friends. I was one of those nerdy girls that had braces and glasses and was addicted to math. I was always on time for school and was a A+ student.…

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Illinois afforded the person the status or label of being African American and from a low socioeconomic status. The only diversity of race, for me, was in the public schools of Chicago, the teachers. Chicago has the distinction of being one of the most segregated cities in the United States with the south side having negative core factors in health, housing, education, and employment and crime. My true baptism in diversity arose from a job in my junior year of high school. When given the opportunity to work with college students from the University of Chicago, I had perceived notions regarding the experience.…

I was an 8th grader at St. Martin's Episcopal school and had thoroughly enjoyed the last four years of my life. The teachers were wonderful, the academics were strenuous but rewarding, and most of all my group of friends were almost unbeatable. Although we spent most of our time in the Dean's office sitting on the brown leather couch decorated with a variety of candy pillows, we truly were a good group of guys and were not looking to our final years together. Sure, we kept telling ourselves we would all get into the same private high school but deep down we knew our days left together were limited. I had done well in school over the past couple years and was not too worried about getting into a good High school.…
