Personal Narrative: My Hard Work In Medical School

Improved Essays
A couple months ago I had a dream. I had a dream that my hard work in school was validated, and I got the letter telling me I’d been accepted into medical school. Later that day, I came to the realization of the relevancy of the dream; and I asked myself how my life would change if I knew at this moment that I’d make it to medical school. How would my life change if I knew I’d successfully get through all of these grueling advanced math and science classes? Going into high school, I had the impression that I would be able to get an A on every assignment, quiz, and test. In conjunction with that illusion, I thought I could breeze through advanced math and science classes. I was much more than mistaken. On an average night I get roughly five hours of sleep, which I hope is a sufficient amount of time to retain the information I tried to learn by homework and studying. In reality I know that I’m lying to myself. I’ve learned in AP Psychology that five hours of sleep is not nearly enough time to create memories of what you have learned. Working two jobs is a necessary part of my goal …show more content…
As for most others, being ensured that you’re going to succeed defeats the purpose of the path to success. I’m the type of person who believes that hard work leads to success, and it shouldn’t be handed to you. Although, like most others, if I was told right now that I would positively be accepted into medical school, a huge sigh of relief would leave my body. I’d sleep for a couple days straight, and start feeling more confident in focusing on other parts of my life besides being perfect in school. Having the goal of being a doctor is intimidating, but I know it’s within my reach even if I have no letter to prove

Various teachers told my parents that I had the potential to have an A in their class; but, when someone does not believe it, they do not achieve it. Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

It is often heard echoing down the class hallways before exams with glorified voices, “I stayed up all night studying for the test” It makes the teachers chuckle, not because students deserve praise, but how detrimental it is to one. This meme lines up with that train of thought, it depicts a college aged female studying from an open book, surrounded by darkness with a grim smirk on her face, in the midst of twenty-one-ish other books in various school subjects, the meme contains text that says “PULLS ALL NIGHTER STUDYING…FAILS EXAM” It is a very relatable illustration for college students and one should realize how disparaging pulling all-nighter study sessions for exams is for one’s health, grades, and productivity It is satirical by what method people will skimp out on their mind and figures in times of stress, an example is the college student who has an exam the succeeding day. Studies prove “Your mind 's effectiveness, including your attention span, information recall and reasoning skills, is significantly decreased when deprived of sleep.”…
